Here's an old thread on this subject that just had some new posts made this month:

AsiaMiles does one-ways up to 600 miles on
CX, EI, AS, AA, BA, QF, MU, KA, LX, VN for 10,000 miles, or up to 1200 miles for 15,000.

KLM also does this - NW doesn't

Air Canada does too... it might also be available through Star Alliance. However, it's not at half price... it's more than that.

Southwest issues awards as a pair of one-way award tickets (ie, they don't restrict them to round trip usage), although both one-way trips have to be booked and flown within a year of the issuance of the award tickets. Southwest works on credits, not miles. You need 16 credits for one of these "round trip" awards, and those 16 credits are generally much easier to earn than the 25000 miles that most airlines charge for a RESTRICTED* round trip; for example, using some credit cards you only need the amount of spending that would earn you 12000 to 20000 miles on other airlines to earn 16 Southwest credits.

*That's another important point: Other than a handful of blackout dates a year, all Southwest award tickets are UNRESTRICTED, usable as long as there is ONE SEAT left on the plane.

But there's no way you can request a single one-way ticket for 8 credits (these "round trip" tickets, which as I said are actually pairs of one-way tickets, are sent to you automatically as soon as get 16 credits).

OTOH, Southewest award tickets are transferrable, so if you can find someone who can use the other one-way ticket, that would be another way to not "waste" the other half of the pair.

Thanks everybody for responding to mer (me). I also found out you can use 12,500 British Airways miles to fly on partners American West and Alaska which works perfectly for me. Curiously, you can't get a one way on AA using BA miles.

United offers one-way awards to its 1K members, at half-mileage, but this is not a "published" benefit. See this thread for further.

AFAIK from reading multiple posts on this recently in the BA area, there's a catch to this: You can no longer cancel or make changes to PARTNER flight awards made using BA miles, only to BA flight awards made using BA miles. So it's just as non-refundable non-changeable as a cheap ticket. So make sure you book a flight you're absolutely sure you'll be able to take.

Interesting thread. Can anyone add to the list of programmes that allow one-way awards?

Aeromexico (only for awards on AM)
Air Canada (only for awards on AC)
American Airlines AAdvantage (only via oneworld distance-based awards)
BA Executive Club
British Midland Diamond Club
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
KLM Flying Dutchman
Mexicana (only for awards on MX)
United (unpublished perk for 1K flyers)

Thanks!

NZ used to but now you get charged for the return even if you dont take it on awards. However for upgrades you can still do one way.

The_Diamond_Z Nov 12, 2003 9:17 am

Virgin and, as someone mentioned above, BA

myleguy Nov 12, 2003 12:59 pm

AirTran. In fact, they only issue one-way awards for 8 credits. If you want to fly roundtrip, you redeem for 2 one ways.
