I just don't know if it will be worth $45 to me because I don't travel frequently for business, don't have much money, but am getting obsessed with accumulating miles. Those don't go well hand in hand, but a girl can dream...

An Internet-only subscription is only $12. That's what I recently did...

This is just in my humble opinion so no offense please, but I think it may be important to point out that the owner of this website (Randy) is also the publisher of Inside Flyer. There is a huge amount of info available here for free and I think Randy goes to quite some trouble to provide FT, keep everything working, not to mention dealing with the little spits and spats that break out occaisionally.

Therefore, I personally feel that it certainly cannot hurt to pay for a subscription to his magazine. FT provides an enourmous amount of knowledge, I feel its only fair to offer a little something in return. Add the many great mileage offers IF has and you really arent spending much money at all, considering what you are getting.

I do not work for FT, IF or similar in any shape or form. This is merely a personal opinion from a subscriber and active FT'er who has benefitted immensely from FT and IF. Worth every penny of the subscription fee.

What about those people who have bought hundreds of subscriptions just to get bonus miles? They paid for those subscriptions, so shouldn't they be able to choose what to do with them?

Personally, I give away subscriptions of magazines I don't want anymore to people at work. Should I say to them, "Sorry, you will have to buy the magazine from the newstand now. I'll just throw my copy away." I know that people can save their subscriptions for coming years, but how many companies do you know have been around for hundreds of years? If someone does happen to give me one subscription, IF is not losing any money. I would not have bought a subscription on my own and the subscription would merely be transferred, resulting in the subscriber's cost of miles being partially subsidized.

I think this is a way that IF could actually sell MORE subscriptions. Well, maybe the owner has a kind heart and cares more about spreading the information the "right" way...

I say it's up to the subscription owners.

Exactly! I'm not wealthy... but like most people, there's a thousand things on my wish list, but I have money for only so many things. I prioritize how my money is spent. #1 rent, #2 food, #3 car, #4 tickets to Germany to see my boyfriend, and somewhere after that is mileage accumulation costs.

A person spends $X for subscriptions to accumulate XX miles. I give $Y for a subscription. Person then actually spends $X-$Y=$Lower to get same XX miles. "Subsidize" means to contribute as to help with total cost right? I hope that X's and Y's made sense. I'm a math geek.

I put "right" in quotes because we are in conflict of what the meaning is. Everyone is spreading tons of free information on flyertalk. Should we give them subscription fees to? I'm sure there are many people who give as much or more of their time and information than the owner. By the way, what is the owner's UserName?

Last year there were a few threads from people who had bought multiple subscriptions who were offering them to FTer's who asked for them. I was one of the lucky FTer's who benefitted from the generosity of a kind stranger and his act has encouraged me to reciprocate and give to others when I could (so when I've had e-certificates to merchants or transferrable hotel certs that I couldn't use I've posted them on the Coupon board and gave them away). I think of FT as a community and I love it/you.

I think what's going on in this thread is the very significant pyschological/emotional difference of someone offering to give something away out of generosity and someone asking to be given something for free.

As to Inside Flyer, I've loved receiving it and I've always learned about something that I hadn't seen on FT and when my subscription runs out I'll be buying a new one - and I'll get Starpoints when I do. Total win/win.

Starpoints are for Starwood right? Which is a hotel chain? I'm not familiar with it, but I could never join that anyways because I hard ever stay in hotels.

I would be more likely to put up money for a subscription if I could just see an issue, or if there was some kind of trial. I can't even find one to look through at the magazine stand. I feel uneasy about spending so much money ($50 is hecka expensive for a magazine!) for something that I don't even know I'll use. I know everyone says it's very useful, but what others find useful may not be for me. That's why I'd like to judge for myself.

You should try reading on this site a bit..you'll find much of the info you're interested in. Starwood is actually generally the credit card of choice around here, as the points can be exchanged 1:1 for miles on many airlines..does not need to be used on hotels.

As previously suggested, why not try the online subscription which is very inexpensive? You might even be able to convince them to upgrade you to the physical version if you asked nicely and paid the difference.

I have a lot of subscriptions to give away (possibly 50+). I just gave away a 50 to lounges, etc.. I usually order a few hundred each year for miles for the family, etc.

Send me an email (in the profile) with an address and I will cut and paste it in my IF order. I will not be picking up the addresses from this thread - only from the email in my profile.

I recommend buying the subscription and the miles offered by the numerous promos (that is what I am doing) but if you are a student, lurker, or simply prefer to get a free subscription, I don't mind. Note that new subs do take a few months to get started.

I looked and unfortunately, Amex does not seem to like me (I've been rejected for a card). I think it's because I have too many credit cards already, debt, and not a big enough salary to support it all. Oh yeah, and there's a "late payment" comment that has tainted my credit report http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif.
