WOW, this is doc as the FlyerTalk historian at his best. I'm very impressed with the very detailed answer - sure to help anyone interested in this unique promotion.

Again, WOW!

ozstamps Sep 24, 2002 9:29 am

Kudos to Doc for (as always) knowing exactly where to look for it, and MEGA Kudos to Ken hAAmer for the EIGHTY or so hotlinks laid out in doc's referenced thread. I never knew UBB would support that many links? 8 (?) smilies per post is max, but 80 hotlinks work fine! Must have taken Ken literally half the day to collate that lot. Must surely be an all-time record for a single FT post? A terrific read - I am starting on it all over again. A great and truly memorable FT'er loophole. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

doc: Why not just let people click on your link to Ken's thread where they can see the whole list, complete with clickable links? That would have worked just fine. And if you want to add some comments, as ozstamps has, sure why not? But wholesale copy/paste of content that is only a link away (and a link that you yourself provided), what purpose does that have?

Funny, doc, when you quoted your own earlier post, you left out the 80 lines or so of copy-and-paste. Are you always as selective about being accurate in quoting things? If you want to point out that you did indeed write "Thanks Ken!", all you have to do is say it, as you must think I am blind. No need to quote your "whole" post from before, as I am surely apt to miss it the second time around too.

To play the devil's advocate here a bit I guess, I can honestly say I never saw Ken hAAmer's link in the thread that Eugene referenced above. And bear in mind that link goes (curiously) to a thread I started - so I would normally have clicked on it at that time. Ken's link to the 80 hotlinks is WAY down a pretty intense thread, and was not as obvious as if Eugene had for instance indexed Ken's actual thread, and not mine. It was indeed the perfect answer to this thread question. Had Eugene done that, I imagine doc would not have taken the trouble with his post? Or if he had - he then WOULD have just been duplicating info.

However, doc pasting the topics as he did (and offering the hot link as well) made it clear it was a thread worth reading. (To me anyway!) And Randy seemed to think it was pretty neat as well listed like that. It was enjoyable spending time clicking on many of the links, and again I have to thank doc for pasting it here. And Ken once again for collating it so well.

I know clickable links do save bandwidth, but SEEING a long list like that for the first time catches the attention. Well it did me anyway. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

The links and threads make me sad http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif I enjoyed the MHD and all it represented... now it is gone (sigh!).

FewMiles Sep 25, 2002 11:19 am

ozstamps, a credible poster saying "this link goes to the comprehensive list of MHD threads http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif" works quite well too, does it not? Incessant copy-and-pasting of other people's content on the other hand doesn't rate too highly to me... I don't know about you...

Sure, doc's wholesale copying of the list of topics gets you curious, but wouldn't you have clicked on the link he provided anyway? After all, you did click on the link in Eugene's post and all he put for commentary was a smiley. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Nope. Sorry, and I am not trying to be contrary, but just answer you Few Miles. I think Eugene did NOT say above as you seem to state: "this link goes to the comprehensive list of MHD threads" - had he done so I'd agree with you. He simply said
"See this thread" as a sole response to a new poster asking 'what was the MHD'. For all I knew it was a single thread he referenced. I did not even look first time, as doc's post caught MY eye. And Randy's eye.

I did not imply for one second I hope that Eugene was not credible - he certainly is. I just wondered why if he knew the answer was buried somewhere deep inside a 3 page thread having nothing to do with MHD, he did not link to the actual thread that explained MHD and be done with it. No idea if Albert waded thru the reams of other extraneous stuff to find it, but I sure did not at first. Life is far too short. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Doc did, also found in archives the correct link, and also pasted it for all to see, and again, I thank him for it. Why ANYONE can be the least bit citical of that (3 times!) quite mystifies me. I bet Albert got his answer from doc's post and no other. And reading all this is possibly wondering what kind of pedantic, petty nut house he wandered into. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

ozstamps, I don't think you're being contrary. I see now that you misinterpreted what I meant. Perhaps I wasn't clear. I did not say or mean to say anything about Eugene not being credible. Rather, I was commenting that doc could have put in a plug/opinion/comment/whatever for the thread he linked rather than just copy and pasting stuff in. That's what doc could have done and it would have been no less effective in conveying that the linked thread is a goldmine of information. doc knows how to express his opinion, I'm just curious why he never does when it comes to regular discussions on FT.

You, for whatever reason, perhaps by fiat, apparently deem that setting the "standards" for others, and also judging them, is your duty here on FT?

May I politely ask if you see yourself as also living up to them?

Yes, indeed, FewMiles!

Once again, seems this would apply only to others, not to you?

Considering the premium that some FT'ers, exemplified by you, appear to place upon the composers/compliers of a list(s), who do all the "work", rather than the seemingly "valueless" person(s) who would only identify a particular location(s) of such, please note that I'd undertaken the task of collecting some of the many other highly objective, constructive comments recently contributed by "FewMiles":

Yes, you have made your point many times: you'll do as you d*mn well please, you don't give a **** (insert noun of your choice; please make it family-friendly) what others think.

By the way, I did look in a mirror and I just see myself smiling at the thought of how absurd this other person must be to spend his time replying to the likes of me if he is so self-assured in his ways. After all for you, criticism is just water rolling off the duck's back.

Again, does anyone notice that there seemingly are some folks that are always searching for a good "fight?"

Alas, in a perfect world, we would surely need not put up with reading each others posts and everyone would do just as you like! We would all be perfect, just as you are!

But, FWIW, in case you didn't know, this is a somewhat less than perfect "FlyerTalk!"

Incidentally, you may again wish to review the FT TOS as well!

Perhaps we can all simply skip the scathing posts regarding "posters" and instead stick with the proper topics of miles, points and travel, okay?

That's because they both want to lead. Although I guess a Mexican hat dance doesn't need strict ballroom techniques anyway. Let's talk Argentine tango instead.

I believe there are eight or nine of us who had done the dirty dance several times while it existed. We each have a certificate and souvenir Mexican hat to attest to our acumen with airline tarrifs, and ability to confound Immigration and Customs agents who couldn't understand why anyone would travel 5K out of their way, through three or four airports, all within 24-hours. Or those MX flight crews who after saying "adios" to us at CUN, only a few minutes later were saying "buenos dias" to us as we reboarded and settled into the very same J class seat we had just spent a few hours in. In all this, I believe only two MHD runners were actually pulled over for a secondary immigration interrogation.

Credit for discovering the MHD goes to Ken Haamer and Blonde Bomber, who found a way to fly transcon Canada in the front cabin on a fully flexible ticket, for slightly more than an H-class restricted economy fare ticket: C$1200, or $US800. Base mileage accumulation was about 12K, but many of us completed our trips when AC had a status mile bonus going, yielding another 4K [about a third of the travel mileage was not eligible for the bonus as it was on MX not AC].

I think this winter we should have a Mexican reunion for all MHD runners in either Cancun, Puerto Villarta, or Mexico City itself.

Why don't you and Ken and blondebomber jiggle those rate codes ONE MORE TIME and ................. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Should've bought one of those "cheapie" tickets, Glen! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm game... perhaps admission should be our little sombrero http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Shareholder I'm game if the dates are right! It should be either CUN or PVR !

Personally I think we all need to stop for at least 1 drink in the Frequenta lounge in the MEX airport. I know I spent many a morning there waiting for the next leg of my journey.

I had a long phone call from a FT'ers based in Canada yesterday who is an AC Super Elite.

I mentioned MHD and he had no idea what I was talking about.

When looking for a thread to reference for him this one came up first.

So hopefully he will get a picture of what this neat deal was all about.

However as all Ken's carefully HTML'd links do not work anymore, all being on the old FT numbers, nor the link from doc here to the thread that contained them, that FT'er will need to select one or more of these on search and go do some more reading. :D

Ah yes--the MHD, what a wonderful time in aviation history. I remember it fondly, including one trip I took with Ken where on Mexicana they even played our song when we boarded, what else but the "Mexican Hat Dance".

I also have one good and bad story where I was detained by immigration at LAX and subjected to a full body and luggage search in a private room due to my frequent trips to eastern Canada with 40 minute layovers in Puerto Vallarta :D
