45,000 miles to Vegas
I am going to Vegas in August and want to use my American Express Reward Miles. I called Continental because they are a partner and fly direct from NYC. I was told that I could book on America West direct - first class for 45,000 miles. I have 2 questions - is first class on America West worth the extra miles, and is 45,000 miles a good deal to get to Vegas?
Thanks,
Lisa

Welcome to FlyerTalk.
America West is not the best service out there. Most of my trips with them have been rather short, PHX and LAS, so I am not sure what you will get in that route.
I would probably post this in the America West forum, and see how many people have taken that trip.
Good luck on your trip.

I belive UA is offering a fare of $250 which includes tax on there JFK-LAS Routes, and you would be able to fly transcon on a 767 to LAX/SFO, or fly LGA-DEN-LAS. With a deal like this I would save the miles..

Continental and America West both offer free upgrades for their elite members. This says a lot about the domestic first class. (Not that it's not good, but it's just not worth the miles)
Unless it's special occasion, I will save the miles. 45,000 miles can get you to Europe or South America, where the miles will bring you more value.

I've not had a trip with AW that something didn't happen to mess things up. Others that I work with like them pretty well, do the first class thing, and seem to do ok. My advice--unless you don't mind potential delays to your trip--is to look elsewhere.

Hi: first of all America West is running coach fares RT NY/LAS for $208. Not only that but America West is like a stepchild airline. I fly it all the time because of the convenience of morning, non-stop flights to Vegas but I would NOT, I repeat NOT, waste miles flying first class on it.

I concur with my fellow flyertalkers: Don't do it! Here's what you can expect..No meal, a couple of drinks and a bigger seat covered with leather. If that is what you are after, then go for it. I was very disappointed with the service. I did not even get the dredded bag of peanuts that everyone hates. Save the miles and pay for coach.

45000 miles to Vegas. Wasn't that a movie title?
Anyway Irosenth, You asked a good question and you received great advice. Clearly not the best use of those points. Also, be sure to check out the Las Vegas forum under Travel Buzz. Lots of good info including the latest hotel promo codes. And, welcome to FT!!!

National Airlines, an excellent airline, has a $210 fare right now from New York to Las Vegas. I'd jump on that and, if desired, buy upgrades to F for $200 each way. They fly all 757s with leather seats, plenty of legroom, and excellent food service in First Class. Coach has decent legroom.

Agreed that 45k not a good deal for Vegas. Highly touristed places, like Vegas and Orlando have competitive fares that are low enough to usually make using miles a bad value.
