FlyerTalk is Back!!!

Wow, I started getting withdrawal symptoms, but I'm glad the site is back. Anyone know what happened?

srodr Jul 15, 2002 9:10 am

Was it scheduled to go down for the weekend? I hadn't seen anything about it.

doc Jul 15, 2002 9:19 am

Indeed it is! And thanks! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

RTW4 Jul 15, 2002 9:35 am

I had definite withdrawal symptoms...headache, malaise. Typical of an addiction!!

I even called up to inquire. Thankfully, it is back. I don't know how I would spend my idle moments.

I E MAILED WEBFLYER TO ASK WHAT HAPPENEND. i think there should be an obligation to notify every flytalker if this site is not working, too depressing. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

I don't think emailing every flytalker would be feasible but a redirected webpage would have been helpful.

Jaybee Jul 15, 2002 11:21 am

Goldfishhh.....Awwwww! How awful for you!
I have been locked out of my isp for 3 days, and then couldn't bring up Flyer Talk. I think the withdrawal symptoms have been going around. I'm so happy to be back. Jean

nologic Jul 15, 2002 11:38 am

That was very frustrating as it was unexpected...wonder what went wrong?

That redirect idea was a good one...just knowing it wasn't me and that there is/was a timetable for return would have been nice. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

missydarlin Jul 15, 2002 11:59 am

Bean!!

So...what did you have for lunch today? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

And keeping on topic...wow, that was a rough weekend wasnt it?

Everytime it goes down I think..."dot.com failure" ...everytime it comes back I breathe a big sigh of relief.

olafman Jul 15, 2002 1:54 pm

You don't realize how much you depend on something until it's gone. I was beginning to think that flyertalk.com would never be back.

We, Flyertalkers, should have an emergency backup plan like we all meet online in some chatroom somewhere when the site is down.

At least we might be able to comfort ourselves in times of need. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Any ideas?

runningshoes Jul 15, 2002 2:26 pm

We could take over one of the other forums! I got home Friday night late and checked Saturday, when I couldn't get in on the home PC, hooked up the office laptop to confirm the site was down and it wasn't something screwy on my PC.

wharvey Jul 15, 2002 2:27 pm

Olafman,

We have such a backup... problem was... that I was the only one there with Markbach!!!

But he was great company!

US1@ORF Jul 15, 2002 2:40 pm

I'm so glad that is over.... I was begining to think I would never get back to the site. I too like others didn't realize how much I depend on it (or how often I check it).

Now I know I'm addicted.

Thanks to FT being down over the entire weekend, I resorted to doing HOUSEHOLD CHORES!!!! Ugh! Cut the grass, used the edge trimmer, washed the cars....

I thought it was gone for ever. Boy am I glad I've been able to get back in. I was worried for a while this weekend. Each time I tried, nothing.

I must be hooked!

Where is the fishing line?

jfe Jul 15, 2002 4:13 pm

I had to send my computer for repair (overheating) so I was having withdrawals without knowing that flyertalk was down.

Glad to see its up and running http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif and that I was not the only one.

I guess I didn't miss anything

I spent a wonderful day with my grandchildren and didn't even notice that FT was down.

And I thought it was one of the lingering after effects of Typhoon Chata'an on nearby Guam.

My partner is SO jealous of my computer. he was really happy that i spent time in the garden-I didnt tell him the reason!!
I am now so hhhaaaapppppyyy!

Yes, we all have a problem. It's probably good for us to go cold turkey every once in a while. At a minimum it makes us appreciate FT all the more when it comes back!

So why did the site fall over ?

I propose we just start posting to a certain travel related bulletin board run by a person with a very strong personality. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

FewMiles Jul 17, 2002 7:43 pm

Perhaps you refer to that other bulletin board? You know, the one where people always play nicely, and say nice things about FlyerTalk, and ... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

FewMiles..

Brian-AAFlyer Jul 17, 2002 8:15 pm

Well.. Seeing as I was posting as it was crashing I'd say it was an application / database error..

The site began to slow down and served fewer and fewer images.. So the processor must have been going hell for leather running in circles..

My guess is a reboot solved all the problems and cleared a 'race' condition..

Based on impirical knowledge, but what the hell do I know http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

olafman Jul 17, 2002 8:36 pm

Okay, I'm in the dark here. Several people have mentioned meeting somewhere else when flyertalk.com is down.

Could someone please share WHERE THIS IS?

Obviously, wherever we meet will not be as good as flyertalk but it will do in a pinch.

hfly Jul 18, 2002 6:19 pm

Don't know about that. I hear (let's watch the HEARSAY... We're sure they are all fine folks over there) I have been sent several screen shots of what went on there over the last several days which prove it! I even hear that one or two of their moderators may get booted over it!?!

FewMiles posted a link (a couple of replies back) to a thread on the other board (which talked about FT being down, actually).

I think if you go to chexfan.com and look at the chex-links.....you will find it....and they do not have people (who are over the edge 90 % of the time) called monitors.
