Miles Rates For Buying/using
Ladies, Gents - Good Morning...
If this is in the wrong place - please divert - searched and didn't come up with anything significant!
Are there standard or generally accepted rates at which you should value miles that are being bought or used?
Of course it depends on how much you have to have that flight (either to buy or use as an award) - but my guess is that someone out there knows - that to purchase EQP or EQM should be worth 0.XX cents or to use an award ticket most people would like to get XXX$ per mile when redeeming...
Mileage runs - might be different as you definitely want lowest cost per mile as well.
Any thoughts or insights would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, - jdburns11

i think that value is all in the mind of the ff member....whats it worth to you....
i always figured the mi's from company paid trips were free & that those i got from personal travel [80% or so of my totals] only cost the difference between my choice and the lower cost ticket....and of course, mr's cost what they cost, which people do when they perceive that it's worth it....of course, i have tweaked both personal and company [when i wasn't taking co time] trips...
most of the miles we used were for int'l ug's or awards for j travel....you can say that say that a 50k mi ug to a $1k coach fare for a $6k j fare makes each mi worth 10 cents, but i wouldn't have bought the $6k fare....so what's the value? i didn't save $5k but enjoyed the trip....
however, we all would like to get the lowest price per mi on a mr....so you spend a lot of time trying to find a low price /mi/pt or whatever...but in the end, it's up to you to decide the value....except for bragging rights on ft....
people rarely assign the value of their time to the cost/mi on a mr...
so, do what makes sense to you...
edit to add.....there are lots of threadsthat talk about this...
some of the recent 1's say $.02/qmi
is fantastic today....
rdm's depend on tier status and promo's
what do you think?

In part, it depends on which airline we are talking about. IMHO Delta miles are worth less than UAL miles which are worth less than AA miles.
I personally don't like to pay anything extra for miles, 'cause there is heavy risk they may become worthless or heavily devalued. However, I have, a few times, paid one cent a mile or less to get some AA or UAL miles. I don't think miles are worth any more than that.
Of course, working backwards give a different result. 90K miles will take you J to Europe from the West Coast. Such a ticket might cost, at retail, ten grand, thus, if I do the math right, making each mile worth over ten cents. But, I don't think any sensible person would pay anything like that for miles.
