2500 Miles for Inside Flyer Subscription

From Mileslink newsletter:

Recently, sister publication Inside Flyer magazine started offering some
pretty impressive bonus miles for subscribers. Order one of the new
'Frequent Flyer Packages' and earn 2,500 bonus points from the Starwood program or 2,500 bonus miles from the Continental OnePass program. Besides pretty good insight on miles and points, this offer means you'll be flying for free in no time.

This has been posted in The Buzz (buried in this thread:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/006633.html ),

in the CO forum
and in the Starwood forum ( http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum74/HTML/003419.html ),
but I think it deserves the attention of its own topic here, as it is a good offer for a good "cause," and is relevant to at least three programs (and maybe all FF programs given the flexibility of SPG). FYI, a subscription is $59.95 and this offer expires 4/30/02.

This makes me a little displeased. I signed up for a subscription in December, and only received my 1st issue LAST WEEK...it was the January issue. I'd say, a bit outdated.

There's no mention of anything about CO or Starwood points for current subscribers is there? I feel kind of ripped off.

Plato90s Mar 29, 2002 4:17 pm

I got notification of this bonus as an e-mail to the account I use to register on FlyerTalk.

Since Randy has repeatedly stated the best way for us to support FlyerTalk is to subscribe to InsideFlyer, I figured I'll do it.

To be honest, the fact that 2,500 Starwood points were offered as a bonus did factor into the decision. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

The 2,500 Starwood points were what caused me to finally subscribe. I've been wanting to support FlyerTalk this caused me to act.

cactuspete Mar 29, 2002 4:24 pm

AirBus330, FWIW Randy has stated in the Starwood thread that this offer is open to current subscribers who wish to renew their subscriptions.

Also, an offer for 2,000 US miles has been added.

Speaking of Inside Flyer, I called to find out how many issues I have left for my current subscription. Although it's been at least one year, I was told they have not been "deducting" every month, presumably due to 9/11 and other problems. So even though the magazine has been arriving late, we've been getting several freebies.

Airbus330 Mar 30, 2002 1:06 am

I suppose when I think about it, the magazine is the main source of funding for FT and thus, I shouldn't complain (though it would be nice to get CO or Starwood miles for current subscriptions)!

Punki Mar 30, 2002 1:33 am

Maybe this is just a good time for us to all pitch in and subscribe.

0524 Mar 30, 2002 7:26 am

I'm in. I'm taking the CO miles deal.

davistev Mar 30, 2002 7:36 am

0521 - my advice is to take the Starwood points deal instead. Then transfer 20,000 points to Continental. Starwood gives a 5,000 point bonus for every 20,000 points transferred to Continental.

essentially $60 = 3125 miles this way.

Just a thought. Dave - London, UK

I thought of subscribing briefly, until I noticed the offer for Canadians is only 6 issues vs. the 12 for U.S. subscribers. It may cost a little more for postage, but 100% more?

Please select your subscription type:

U.S. Addresses FREQUENT FLYER PACKAGE - $59.95 USD
Earn 2,500 bonus OnePass miles
Receive 12 issues of InsideFlyer ($45) plus a copy of "The Official Frequent Flyer Guidebook" ($14.95)

International Addresses FREQUENT FLYER PACKAGE - $59.95 USD
Earn 2,500 bonus OnePass miles
Receive 6 issues of InsideFlyer ($45) plus a copy of "The Official Frequent Flyer Guidebook" ($14.95)

Hmmmm. The offer seems a bit unclear here. Not unlike some of UA's stuff which appears to treat Cananda as a domestic destination. See the fine print below:

Fine Print: Because of the generous bonus points offer, this offer is non-refundable. Offer is available to Starwood Preferred Guest members worldwide. Members living outside of the U.S. and Canada will only receive InsideFlyer on a bi-monthly basis (6 issues) with our international program news enhanced editions.

I interpret this to mean that if you live in either the U.S. OR Canada you get the full 12 issues.

Jailer Mar 30, 2002 11:23 am

$60 is a modest sum to pay to support FT. I’m in.

carlhaynes Mar 30, 2002 11:44 am

I also decided it was time to subscribe, I've been meaning to do so for a long time anyway.

I've certainly gotten more than $60 worth of information from Flyertalk over the last 2 years.

Mvic Mar 30, 2002 12:29 pm

From the *woods site:

"With American Airlines, you can transfer up to 99,999 StarpointsSM into AAdvantage® Miles at a 1-to-1 ratio. And for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred you'll earn 5,000 bonus Starpoints, which will be automatically added to your transfer."

I assume that this means one can transfer 99,999 *points per transfer but that there are no limits on the number of transfers that can be made. Is this correct?

marksec Mar 30, 2002 3:10 pm

SPG "Special member services" stated to me that the limitation was per transfer and not per period. However, she stated to be sure I would have to check with an "American Airlines" employee.

Helen123 Mar 30, 2002 9:36 pm

earn some miles and support flyertalk? count us in too. =)

Derf Mar 30, 2002 10:17 pm

I would be very appreciative to receive a subscription if any of you out there in flyertalk land are buying more than one subscription for the points. Can't sport the $60 right now, but would be intersted in receiving the mag. Send me an email if you would be so kind.

ExMo Mar 30, 2002 10:21 pm

A $60 subscription is a mere trifle to the thousands of dollars that Randy and the members of FlyerTalk have saved me. Add to that the hundreds of hours of enjoyment I have experienced by participating here and you have the reasons that I will sign up for this offer. Of course, the 2500 Starwood points are nothing to sneeze at!

I asked about this before. SPG told me that it was per transfer, but that only one transfer was allowed per business day. More specifically, only one transfer in the same amount is allowed per business day. This is how they catch accidental duplications (not only by the customer or front-line rep, but in any of the multiple steps between the customer and the airline posting of transferred points). So, if you had 500,000 points to transfer, you'd have to do it over 6 days. Not a big deal in my book.

If there is anyone who does not have the 60 bugs, please let me know by email maybe I will buy some more subscriptions

wharvey Mar 31, 2002 9:20 am

Does anyone know if "The Official Frequent Flier Guidebook" gets updated? I have the one I purchased last year...

William

wharvey Mar 31, 2002 9:34 am

Just ordered my subscription... a small price to pay for what this board has provided to me. And the Starpoints are a nice bonus!

Mvic Mar 31, 2002 7:30 pm

Just placed an order for 40 subs. The points will push me over the 2MM lifetime miles on AA.

Started with 0 miles in my AA account (switched to AA from BA shortly after joining FT) and 23K miles in my TWA account in March of 2000 when a friend of mine found FT via the WSJ's story on Pudding Guy and forwarded it to me (he recently got FC RT. to Lihue for 2 as a wedding present so it worked out for him http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif ). He sent it to me because he knew that the home schooling curriculum I had devised for my child(ren) involved allot of world travel. Since then, thanks to FT, I have flown allot and been allot smarter about it, stayed in allot of Hiltons and reaped the benefits (150K+ in the HH account from 0 in March 2000 as I used to only stay in Marriotts), and participated in the Kellogg's(over $5K worth of food to ST Louis Food bank), valuemag's/goldpoint's(my 2 local libraries complete mag. subscription needs taken care of for at least 1 year and all points eventually awarded from GP's despite some hiccups), and now the Insideflyer/*woods promo's all thanks to info found on FT. In addition, I have been able to make my father's dream of flying on the Concord come true allot sooner than I otherwise would have been able to(used some of the GP's for BA and added my father to the household account).

It is only fitting that I achieve my original objective of lifetime AA Plat. by saying a big thanks to Randy and the FT community by subscribing to Inside Flyer, thereby doing my bit to help support FT. I am really pleased to have this (mile earning http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif )opportunity to show my gratitude. Thanks Randy and all the helpful and enthusiastic FT'ers who make FT such an enjoyable and informative place.

Thank you, above all, for the incredibly positive experience and thanks in advance for all the cheap scholastic/leisure travel.

kempis Apr 1, 2002 3:29 am

I will order my Inside Flyer subscription later next week and I wonder how many new subscribers they will get with this promo.

To bad that I live outside of the US and will only get 6 numbers but that doesnt mean so much since I am doing this to support Randy and FT in general.

BeantownFlyer Apr 1, 2002 7:23 am

I've subscribed for years and think its a great publication - when it actually shows up. If one wants to support FlyerTalk you'd be better off just writing a check. The frequency of publication and the timeliness of delivery of Inside Flyer is a disgrace, and is really without excuse. And this has nothing to do with 9-11; it was a problem even before.

tulane85 Apr 1, 2002 11:17 am

Mvic, thanks for your interesting testemonial. I would be interested in hearing morea about this world-travel "homeshcooling" curriculum!

Mvic Apr 1, 2002 12:16 pm

Thanks Tulane. With regards to the homeschooling,I like to think of it as an integrated approach to education. For example, when teaching the renaissance I have in mind to spend a couple of months renting a place in Florence. It will help bring the history and the ideas alive, not to mention giving her/them the opportunity to brush up on Italian(she is half Italian) and experience Italian culture. Throw in side trips to visit places of interest, some singing lessons, a cooking class, some opera's, and so on and so forth, and I hope it will make for a very rich and broad learning experience. One that she will spend several months preparing for by doing everything from reading about people like Dante, Manzoni, Galileo, Verdi, and Machivelli, to name a few, to the budgeting, planning, and logistics for the trip. All the while writing about her learning experience and sharing it via her web site and in person with her friends.

6-8 weeks for IF miles to post

Heads up guys! I will probably do this but was hoping the points post quickly - need to top off my CO Nonepass acct. Was told by Randy's staff 6-8 weeks for miles to post. Still a good deal but won't help me with my immediate need to top off CO for an award, will have to go with Amex MR transfer.

Hey, 60 bucks for Randy is way better than the 60 bucks I spent for Bestfares magazine a few years back. I'm in.

cactuspete Apr 2, 2002 2:05 pm

The Starwood points would be an easy way to knock off one of the five partners needed for the NW Fly Free Faster 2 10,000-mile promo. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

paradocs Apr 2, 2002 2:08 pm

Ling, I just received my last issue of Best Fares. Sadly, I am not going to renew after receiving it about 5 years. The web site is just too cumbersome compared to here.

I did renew Inside Flyer 5 issues early to take advantage to this offer.

How about another benefit...when you buy all those subscriptions check to see if you can send them to non profit orgs. and take the tax deduction.

gleff Apr 3, 2002 9:35 am

boy did i wish i had waited to sign up for inside flyer..

i bit at the old clickrewards offer, and the clickmiles finally posted (after a long lag) a day before clickrewards folded.

this, however, is a remarkable deal.

Lisa @ WebFlyer Apr 3, 2002 9:47 am

SteveHOU,

When you place the order, if you specify a specific charity address you'd like to send the magazines to and save your receipt, the donation would be tax-deductible. However, if you don't specify which charity/location you'd like to donate them to, we'll donate them to various airport lounges around the world.

the scribbler Apr 3, 2002 9:50 am

There should be no hesitation for those of us who are not already subscribers. Randy has asked for our support, it is that simple: subscribe!

Jakester Apr 3, 2002 10:48 am

I need help from one of you math geniuses.

If 1 starpoint transferred to AA gets you 1 mile, and 1 starpoint transferred to QF gets you 2, and since QF issues reward travel on BA/AA, wouldn't you be better off, more bang for buck, transferring to QF? And then get them to issue the reward on AA?
