Another Million Mile Contest (2X)

Here's another one:

http://svc.travelocity.com/promos/mi...LOCITY,00.html

Travelocity is giving away a million miles each week for the next two weeks - any FF program. It's pretty easy to enter - just a name and e-mail address. You can get 10 additional entries by providing 10 names and e-mail addresses. Expires 3/14.

The rules state "Only one (1) prize is permitted per family or household." I can live with that.

Also, one interesting note: they're valuing the prize at $10,000. For all you big-time mileage contest winners, this might be good ammo for reducing your 1099. Good Luck!

thanks, i'm on it. Good catch. BTW, there is some small print for some of you:

- excludes people in Rhode Island, New York and Florida, must be twenty-one (21) years of age and older as of 3/01/02, have Internet access and an existing e-mail address prior to 3/01/02, and are currently enrolled in a frequent flier program with American Airlines, Delta, Continental or United.

I wonder why they're excluding Alaska, Hawaii, Rhode Island, New York and Florida.

I don't like that one bit.

I believe they want a daytime phone number and your zip code also. The maximum number of entries per person is either one or ten, depending upon which sentence of the rules you read (see below).

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">
HOW TO ENTER:
To enter, Visit the Travelocity.com web site located at: http://www.travelocity.com/millionmiles (the "Site") between 5:00pm PT on 3/01/02 and 11:59pm PT on 3/14/02 and complete the Official Registration Form by providing the following information: full legal name, e-mail address, daytime phone number, and zip code. You need not enroll as a member of Travelocity.com in order to submit an entry. No mechanically reproduced entries will be accepted. In addition, you will receive an additional entry into the sweepstakes when you use our "forward to a friend feature" to forward an invitation for your friend to become a member of Travelocity. Maximum number of entries, whether by completing the Official Registration Form or using "forward to a friend" is ten (10) entries per person/email account. In the event of a dispute as to the identity of the entrant, the entrant will be deemed to be the individual who is the registered holder of the e-mail account. Multiple entries by the same person, whether using one or more e-mail accounts, will not be accepted and may result in disqualification of all entries. Sponsor may not verify receipt of entries. Automated entries, including without limitation, auto-remailers, are prohibited, and any use of such automated devices will result in disqualification. Entries are limited to individuals only; commercial enterprises and business entities are not eligible. Sponsor is not responsible for incorrect or inaccurate entry of information by participants; lost entries or transmissions; interrupted or unavailable network, server, or other connections; scrambled transmissions or other errors or problems of any kind whether mechanical, human, or electronic, technical malfunctions of the computer hardware, software, or any combination thereof; or problems associated with any virus or any other damage caused to participants' systems. Incomplete entries will be voided. All entries become the property of Sponsors and will not be returned. EACH ENTRANT AGREES TO INDEMNIFY, DEFEND, AND HOLD SPONSOR HARMLESS FROM ANY AND ALL THIRD PARTY CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF SUCH ENTRANT'S USE OF THE "FORWARD TO A FRIEND" FEATURE, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, CLAIMS RELATING TO "SPAM," UNSOLICITED EMAIL (COMMERCIAL OR OTHERWISE), HARASSMENT, JUNK E-MAIL, BULK EMAIL.</font>

My guess is that it has to do with state laws regarding winning contests and how a sweepstakes is treated legally. But that's only my speculation.

I noticed a similar exclusion in the million-mile sweepstakes that Choice Hotels has going on right now. They excluse residents of Florida. Not sure if this is related to all that Publisher Clearing House litigation, etc. against sweepstakes but it might be good research since these are some pretty populous states to not be earning million-mile payoffs. Hell, they have PowerBall.....

Thanks for the info regarding the retail value. I'm in the middle of writing an explanation to my federal tax return as to why my 100,000 frequent flyer miles winnings should be worth $1000, not $2000. The Terms and Conditions will make a nice exhibit to my explanation.

Ahhh...yet another contest that thinks the only people who fly those airlines live in the US....Oh well...with the exchange rate here in Canada, the prize would have probably only been worth 13,247 miles... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

OK, so I'm relatively new at this. If I were to win, does this mean that if I deposit enough miles in my AA FF acount to total one million, I would get one million status?

Likewise, what does this do for a Delta FF acount?

Not that I'm going to win, but my friends and I thank you for the lead to this contest.

singlemalt Mar 5, 2002 10:59 am

oldpenny: You get lifetime gold status on AA; DL - no status, just miles. Good luck!

Having worked at a company that ran a lot of sweepstakes, I can tell you that Rhode Island, NY and Florida are often excluded from sweepstakes because of their onerous sweepstakes laws. Companies are required to register their sweepstakes and/or post a bond in these states with the value of the prizes to be given away. It's usually easier to just exclude those states. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Anyway, thanks for the tip on the sweepstakes!

oldpenny16 Mar 5, 2002 2:40 pm

Dear SingleMalt,

I guess that this is another reason for me to keep flying AA as much as possible.

The Delta 'base miles' system gives me a migraine and a state of confusion. I think in the long, long run I am better off with AA. I figure 5 more years and I'll have one million on AA. I was hoping to do it in 2005, which is my 20 year anniversity with AA, but don't think that is possible now.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the heads up on the contest!!

singlemalt Mar 6, 2002 2:35 pm

If your wonder why certain states are excluded, Buster is right on - here's the reply I received from Travelocity:

"We have to bond sweepstakes in those states 30 to 60 days ahead of time. This promotion was something we put together very quickly and thus did not have the time to set up a bond and register the promotion in those
states.
Regards,
Karen E
Travelocity.com"

To those who expressed thanks - you're very welcome. I'd love to see an FTer win - it'd be nice to be able to give something back after getting so much.
