Another Million Mile Contest (2X)
Here's another one:

It's pretty easy to enter - just a name and e-mail address. You can get 10 additional entries by providing 10 names and e-mail addresses. Expires 3/14. The rules state "Only one (1) prize is permitted per family or household." I can live with that. Also, one interesting note: they're valuing the prize at $10,000. For all you big-time mileage contest winners, this might be good ammo for reducing your 1099. Good Luck! |

I noticed a similar exclusion in the million-mile sweepstakes that Choice Hotels has going on right now. They excluse residents of Florida. Not sure if this is related to all that Publisher Clearing House litigation, etc. against sweepstakes but it might be good research since these are some pretty populous states to not be earning million-mile payoffs. Hell, they have PowerBall.....

Thanks for the info regarding the retail value. I'm in the middle of writing an explanation to my federal tax return as to why my 100,000 frequent flyer miles winnings should be worth $1000, not $2000. The Terms and Conditions will make a nice exhibit to my explanation.

OK, so I'm relatively new at this. If I were to win, does this mean that if I deposit enough miles in my AA FF acount to total one million, I would get one million status?
Likewise, what does this do for a Delta FF acount? Not that I'm going to win, but my friends and I thank you for the lead to this contest. |

Having worked at a company that ran a lot of sweepstakes, I can tell you that Rhode Island, NY and Florida are often excluded from sweepstakes because of their onerous sweepstakes laws. Companies are required to register their sweepstakes and/or post a bond in these states with the value of the prizes to be given away. I guess that this is another reason for me to keep flying AA as much as possible. The Delta 'base miles' system gives me a migraine and a state of confusion. I think in the long, long run I am better off with AA. I figure 5 more years and I'll have one million on AA. I was hoping to do it in 2005, which is my 20 year anniversity with AA, but don't think that is possible now. Thanks again. |

If your wonder why certain states are excluded, Buster is right on - here's the reply I received from Travelocity:
"We have to bond sweepstakes in those states 30 to 60 days ahead of time. This promotion was something we put together very quickly and thus did not have the time to set up a bond and register the promotion in those states. There's a reason they're willing to give away all those miles for all this info! They even have a SPAM and junk mail disclaimer on their site!
Are you willing to risk you email box being bombarded with SPAM, your mailbox filled with junk mail, and constant interruptions at dinnertime for junk calls...just to get a nebulous chance at a million miles??? Whats another piece of junk mail when you already get 20 per day?
The real question is which program would you put the miles in? I'd have to go with AA and the lifetime Gold Status. Even though right now they aren't my preferred carrier, lifetime status is hard to beat. [This message has been edited by whlinder (edited 03-07-2002).] |
