JFK Terminal cleared because of another Minimum Wage Screw Up

From the 1010 WINS website tonignt:

November 1, 2001 6:01 pm

(New York-AP) -- The American Airlines terminal at Kennedy Airport was evacuated Thursday, after a team of Federal Aviation Administration security agents saw baggage screeners failing to follow security rules.

Jim Peters, an FAA spokesman, said the terminal at Kennedy Airport was evacuated at about 4:30 Thursday afternoon.

He said FAA civil aviation security agents observing security procedures at a checkpoint saw screeners allowing passengers to continue through the concourse, even after security alarms went off.

Peters said the terminal was searched and all passengers were re-screened.

The terminal was closed for about an hour and a half.

Please post news reports in the "News" board, as is FT tradition, in the future. Thanks.

While this is a quote from a news story, I didn't think it belongs in news. It directly addresses the security issues being addressed by at least six other threads in this forum, none of which have been asked to be moved to news, all of which are little more then links to a news story.

I personally have never even been to the news forum until a few seconds ago, and certainly have seen many many many posts relating to security issues at airports through out the world either here or in Omni.

I'll be more careful in the future, as soon as I figure out what goes where.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Federal Aviation Administration closed one screening checkpoint at JFK International Airport in New York after agents became concerned that screeners were not following proper security procedures, an FAA spokeswoman said.

Priorities for the new TalkBoard to Consider

Well, what are they? Anyone?

1) Moderators - what is/are their role(s)?

2) Buzz - what goes there - and what doesn't?

3) Search - improvements in capabilities and/or ease of use?

FWIW, these are my top three priorites for FT, in no real order of priority! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ...

Hopefully, one day soon we'll ALL know! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Minimum wage screwup?

I recently was in a legislator's office. The head secretary was clipping coupons.

Today, I saw a CEO's secretary. She was playing solitaire on the computer.

I know a VA hospital nurse who is very nice but lazy.

None of them make minimum wage. Hard questions, no easy answers.

Skylink, Interesting perspective. As if inadequate job performance could simply be linked to minimum wage ...

NJDavid Nov 2, 2001 6:27 pm

Well I have a solution...lets do what the House Republicans want to do.

Lets have federal standards for private companies, supervised by a federal agency.

Oh, wait. Never mind. That's what we have now.

blairvanhorn Nov 2, 2001 6:40 pm

NJDavid,

I'm not sure I follow?

NJDavid Nov 2, 2001 9:20 pm

Just the current debate about airline security - Federal Law enforcement personnel vs private screeners under federal supervision.

I was making the point that the House just passed a bill that is (for all the important stuff) indistinguishable from the lunacy we have now. And, as pointed out here, the lunacy continues.

Thanks, got it.

DO NOT assume making screeners federal employees will make them any better. The Democrats will demand minority hire. And after a year on the job all hires will be impossible to fire for incompetence. All that will change is the pay, which will go up and up as all "simple service" pay does. Job performance will be worse than ever. Travelers will be paying double or tripple for a lower level or "inspection." Be cateful what you wish for. Federal workers are not the answer.

NJDavid Nov 3, 2001 8:46 am

What we have now is not the answer either. ANd that's what the Republicans in the House are offering us. The Republicans and the Democrats in the senate knew that this had to change.

Personally, I don't care if the screeners work for the Feds, the state or the city. They need to be law enforcement officers - cops - carrying firearms - fully trained - fully supported ny us - completely independent of the airlines or airport authorities - with only safety as their goal. Aside from that, put whatever ability to fire, etc. clauses in that you want. They need to be real police.
