Miles for Insurance?

I just turned 25 & was hoping to get my car insurance finally lowered a bit. So I called up Geico & apparently, since I'm a single unmarried male, my insurance with them won't actually drop til I'm 30. So, I figured it was about time to shop around for insurance.

I realize that certain purchases in life don't necessarily make sense to buy just to get the airline miles & that insurance is probably one of those things, but I figured if theres an insurance company that offers miles/points, then it can't hurt to check them out & at least get a rate quote. I checked out pgary's page & none of the company's listed there serve my area or interests. I live in VA & am looking only for car insurance. The program(s) I would be interested in earning on are: NW/UA/CO/BA/DL/SPG.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks!

First of all, Happy Birthday!!!!!

Secondly, I seem to recall seeing an insert with my last State Farm insurance bill that if I paid all at once via the website I could use a credit card.

I'm not 100% certain, but you may want to check it out.

Happy birthday from me too ...

I pay the lion share of my insurances with credit card.
Also with credit card:
-Tax
-Stamps
-TV cable (Comcast)
-Water & Sewer - I only found this out recently
-All phone bills ..

Allstate allows payments to be made with credit cards using their website. I get several thousand miles every year doing this using my airline affiliated Mastercard.

I do that, and it even lets me split the bill into 50/50 + $2 payment and I can still use the credit card to make both payments. It depends on what state you live in if you can pay by credit card, I believe. (At least on statefarm.com)

Personally, I wouldn't use that as the sole criteria for picking an insurance company. If everything else is equal (price/service/coverage/company rating/etc) sure, then the ability to manage/pay via website with or without a credit card is a big plus.

I have American Express as my auto insc. carrier, I use my DL Amex to pay the bill, dont get any special point ratios or anything, just 1:1. But still two cars, better than nothing.

I believe GEICO will only let you use a credit card when you start a policy or if you want to pay off all of the remaining balance on the phone.

Second that. Working in the insurance industry, the things you are should be looking for (in order) in an insurance policy are:

1) Claims paying ability <- Whether or not your valid claim will be paid
2) Service <- Whether or not you'll be able to communicate with your broker/carrier
3) Coverage <- Whether or not certain things are covered
4) Rating <- Not quite as important as most people think, as 1) is more indicative than rating. Unless you go for a "D" rated company, it's unlikely your company will go belly-up in a year
5) Price <- Last on the list. Because if #1, #2, #3 or #4 are lacking, it doesn't matter what #5 is. The most expensive insurance is the one that doesn't take care of you.

Remember, too, that companies that score similarly on points 1-4 above may have dramatically different pricing models that result in different premiums for the same driver. Of particular relevance is your credit score. You may want to consider checking your score to determine whether you are in "A" credit territory (typically above 700, though insurance companies will stress that they do NOT rate on credit but rather on your "insurance score" which they typically calculate internally but is heavily derived from your credit score).

In addition, you may find that, depending on how long you've been with your current carrier, renewal discounts may make it tough to switch.

PS. I know that State Farm, Allstate and Nationwide all take cc, but typically only for full payment, which is typically 6 mos. coverage.

AAA will allow you to make your first payment for insurance with a credit card, however, subsequent bills need to be paid with an alternate method, such as a check.

Thanks for the replies & birthday wishes!

Thanks!

I've currently got Geico & previously had Progressive. Both have allow me to pay with a credit card & my 6-month premium is about 540 every 6 months, so I'll get the 540 miles every 6 months - that's not what I was really concerned about. I haven't had any problems with either one & I've got a very clean driving record (fought my past 2 speeding tix in court & had the case dismissed on both - caught the officer in a lie the second time - of course, nothing happened to him for lying in court!). I've got a pretty decent deal right now - as under 90/mo is pretty good (and I have the 300K/300K coverage on the things you can have it on & my deductibles are 250 for comprehensive & 500 for collision). I was just wondering if there were any companies that actually offered miles as an incentive for doing business with them.

Miles for Insurance

I have MetLife and pay every six months by credit card with a simple phone call.

JIMCHI May 13, 2004 9:47 am

Allstate lets you pay whatever amount you want-- you don't have to pay for 6 months coverage at one time.

As mentioned previously, I use American Express Auto Insc., I pay 6 months at a time at my wish. I can pay monthly, but in order to do so, then want me to pay a "convenience fee" of $4/monthly. To save nearly $50/year I just pay semi-annually.

What I would like to know JimChi is how do you pay what you amount you desire? Do you mean, you pay a certain % in cash/check & balance in credit card? Or lets assume that you monthly premium is $100, you can decide to pnly pay $65 that month & the balance "when ever?"

Ric

GMAC Auto insurance lets you pay online with your credit card. Master and Visa only though. No AmEx or discover. I pay the whole six months to qualify for a discount, so I don't know whether you can make month to month payments

prmangena May 13, 2004 2:34 pm

I am with American Family Insurance, I pay with my credit card by calling them every month.

Allstate's website gives you several choices:
1) pay your balance due in full with a credit card
2) pay the monthly amount of your premium (e.g 1/12th of your premium plus a $3.50 fee a month for making monthly payments)
3) pay some other amount (I, for example, pay 3 months at a time so I just enter 1/4th of the yearly premium plus 3.50). If I wanted I could just enter $100 or any amount I want.

They also have an electronic withdrawal option from your checking account- same options as above. So you could combine payment by credit card with payment from your checking account. All they care is that they get the minimum payment specified, which is normally one month's premium.

Schutzee May 14, 2004 6:46 am

Progressive and GMAC accept Master and Visa for monthly payments via phone or web.

Nationwide takes credit cards for any persoanl automobile insurance bill, not just six months. If you can't do it online, call your agent - he/she can take the cc payment over the phone - I know because I take these payments all the time.

An answer to your question?

Since there are now two pages of comments and not a single answer to your question, I will answer it. I don't know of any insurance companies that will give you miles for being insured with them. However, if you want to pay with a credit card to earn miles just like any other purchase, check out your company of choices' website. But you already knew that, so the answer to your questions as far as all the posters know is No.

Minor disagreement with #4....even A-rated carriers went down quickly in 2001-2002, ie Legion, Reliance, etc........rating is not as important, correct...however, true financial stablility is......Most brokers will let you use Credit Cards to pay the monthlies AND will keep you abreast of the insurance carrier's finances (at least mine does)

I use AMEX for all insurance transactions....and they hit the card automatically every month for personal and corporate insurance policies. Mega miles on that stuff.
:)

Just as an FYI if anyone that lives in any of the bolded states & the the info that prompted me to ask this question about VA:

From Pgary's site (click Finance & then Insurance)

AIG insurance quote and Hawaiian Airlines AIG will give residents of the Hawaiian Islands 250 Hawaiian Airlines miles for obtaining a free quote for automobile or home owner's insurance from them. Call (808) 544-3944 (Oahu) or (800) 426-0114 (Neighbor Islands).

Sentry Insurance quote and Midwest Airlines Sentry Insurance will give residents of Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio and Arizona 500 Midwest Airlines miles for obtaining a free quote for automobile or home owner's insurance from them. Call 800-3SENTRY. "Eligible Midwest Miles Members may receive a 5 percent discount on select auto and homeowners policies." Info here.

I currently have Geico and have paid by credit card for miles. The last time I renewed I was told that the policy was changing and that they would no longer be taking credit cards by the time my next renewal rolled around. That is enough reason to change insurers if I can find a rate in the same ballpark, which they have certainly motivated me to try to do!

bhatnasx May 17, 2004 11:38 am

That's very odd - because I've definitely been using a CC with Geico for as long as I have had them & I just renewed a few months ago. I guess I'll find out in September when it comes time to renew. I just called Geico & they said that there's no such change as far as they knew.

I'm curious whether different insurance companies base one's ability to pay with a credit card for their services on their insurance ratings.

Point taken. Let's not forget Kemper, either.

However, an "A" rated company is probably less likely to fail than a "D" rated company -- (probably)

Geico will take credit cards for payment if you 1) make payment in full and 2) pay over the phone (their website will not accept credit cards). This is the case in the western U.S. but may not be in other regions of the country.

ofrasca Jun 30, 2004 6:54 pm

For CA residents only, you can get miles (over and above the credit card charge) Call Gary or Rich at 510.690.9111
