In-Cabin Ads On Overhead Bins???
Advent Mktg (Kansas City) is recruiting
advertisers and airlines for their (cough) "stylish and elegant" AirAds (tm) program. It seems to me that the cabin is going to become even more of a bus-like experience if they succeed. -doug [This message has been edited by dranz (edited 06-22-2000).] |

I've seen a picture of the ads, and they are very understated ... usually just the company's name and maybe a website or phone number.
My opinion is that any revenue stream the airlines can avail themselves of that doesn't come out of my wallet is good ... |
"Stylish and elegant?" ??? We are inundated with yet more ads. Great. What's next? Ads on the seatback in front of you? How about ads in the lou! Oh! I know, ads on the pull-down windowshades! Hey, ads inside the overhead bins so you see them when getting your bags out. Maybe ads on the upper surface of the wings so that people with window seats over the wings have something to look at.

Uh, ads on the seatback in front of us have been with us for a while ... on UA flights with the GTE airphones--they run them on the LCD displays while the phone is in the cradle.

I can not remeber what airline it was, but I think it is AirUK (now KLM UK) that had adds on the back of the tray tables. Also, BM has Coke adds on the beverage cart, even though they had switched to Pepsi.

I have seen the Ryanair planes from the outside and agree with Beckles that if airlines can get revenue somewhere else instead of my pocket let them go for it. When you get on a Ryan Air plane, while it may not look like Ryan Air on the outside, it sure does on the inside. Tiny seats, run for the seat you want, pay for the drinks, pay for the food. But then, the price is right. Also, it is nice to be surprised to see which add you will be flying in.
On one Ryan Air flight the taxes on my ticket were more then the fare. Let them keep advertising. |

On my most recent KLM Cityhopper flight, they have started putting ads on the back of the seats.

At first I thought, What a terrible idea.
Then after reading the comments from those that would welcome any revenue stream that would lower fare prices I got to thinking that perhaps they were right. Perhaps you should be given the option of flying for 20% off if you keep paging through books of ads and filling out surveys etc during your flight. Infact maybe if the airline entered in to enough partnerships and sold every inch of blank space aboard and had you register for various CC offers and phone deals etc ad nausem (literally), maybe, just maybe with the right amount of creativity, perseverance, and Visine one could actually earn money taking a plane trip. (trip dollar conga anyone?) I on the other hand will still be one of the paying customers and if necessary will avail myself of the eye-shades that are issued on board (unless of course they have an ad on the eye side in large fluorescent letters).
