Cant pay for food at Newark Airport with UA Miles anymore?

As of today, Newark airport has a new ordering process. Apparently it no longer allows you to pay for food and drinks with Miles. Anyone else running into this? Our server actually called his supervisor who then called the IT department and came back with this answer.

This is the first I've ever heard of paying for food or, well, anything with miles Is this in a certain airline lounge or is this a publicly accessible eatery in the terminal?

Really? We do it all the time. No, not in a lounge, but at every place that they have the little ipad-type ordering for food - in Terminal C, specifically. Some are at the gates, and some are in the center islands. United originally announced it in 2014, and we've been doing it since then. There is a story on USA today I tried to post, but it won't let me include a link.

But for some reason, this trip, the option was gone. The server was as surprised as we were.

That might explain why -- I have never flown United, and the last time I was in Terminal C was 2009.

Very interesting, but I can't imagine it's as good a value as actual travel when it comes down to it.

Value is in the eye of the holder.

Nah - it was a really bad value, like .7 cents per mile.

I was in EWR today, and when I used the self-checkout at the big Terminal C food court bazaar, it did show United miles as a form of payment. The value was something like 0.8 cents per mile, so I passed.

When faced with a food offering by TG I almost always pass regardless of form of payment. I was reminded of that after obtaining dinner at EWR the other day.

Yup, I'd say not offering the miles option is doing everyone a favor by not 'tempting' them to waste their miles.

On the other hand, the options at EWR (Term C) are pretty awful and sky high prices to boot - even comparing with other airports. Some of both the worst, yet most expensive airport food I've seen. If OTG doesn't see another dime from me for the rest of my life, and I don't have to eat another OTG meal (OTG....🤮..apologies to those with EWR as their home airport or main connecting option), then I'll be good. At least IAH and YYZ also have non-OTG options.

I believe you need to scan the BP or put in your Mileage Plus number for the pay with miles option to appear?

Right - but sometimes (in the past at least), the OTG software would roll 3 sevens and say that your food or items being purchased were comp'd.

When attempting to pay with a Chase UA Credit Card like the Explorer Card. Whats the name of that private dining room in the back of a restaurant (I forgot the name) However, I was comped there once. I didnt even have a reservation but I gave them my credit card number or MP # at the podium and they escorted me to the back to that little private dining room which was quite nice but the iPads were in the middle of the table
