Or do XXX-CCU-XXX separately, where XXX is either DEL or BOM. Buy a ticket on an LCC (e.g. Indigo, very reliable) for this domestic sector. Should come out to about $150-$200 RT.

Use AA miles from LAX to BKK/buy BKK-CCU leg
You can also use AA miles to fly LAX to BKK via HKG and/or NRT for 70K rt in Y/110K rt in J.
Then you can purchase a 9W ticket between BKK and CCU. You can usually get the flights in BKK to line up so it's an international connection in BKK and you pick up luggage in CCU when you land. |
Dragonair has service from HKG starting november 2nd! if you can, I think it's possible to do 70K with AA miles all the way to CCU.

Nope; North America to India is 45K AA miles each way in Coach. And AA does not permit routing via the Pacific on such awards. |
