Starting Date For Spending Threshhold

Received my AMEX SPG card today. Need to spend $15,000 in 6 months. When would the starting date begin for the 6 month period, at approval, mailing or activation? Would like to defer the starting date by delaying activation, if possible, in order to spend on other cards to meet their time constraint threshholds.

I'm almost positive that it's from the date of approval.

there's another thread or 2 on this....iirc, there was some consensus that it is the approval date, but perhaps calling re your card can confirm it & you can get the actual date....good luck...

I thought it depends when you get the first statement. Even without transactions. For example if it is in May then your starting day is the first statement date.

If I remember correctly, they told me it was from the activation date. (I actually called and checked when I got the card, and then when I was close to 5 months and still needed a couple of thousand to hit my spending goal.)

That corresponds to eastbiz's assessment - your first statement date should be a month after your activation date.

I just qualified for the Citibank AAdvantage Visa and Amex cards and both reps I spoke with said the start date was the date of my instant approval. Not exactly fair but my spend is only 1500 over 6 months so not a big deal for me.

My experience was with the SPG Amex. Definitely a 'call and ask' situation - it can't hurt to call in this case.

Definitely call and ask. My start date was a few days after my approval date (Chase BA - due to delays in shipping the card?) and the same was true for Mrs. Jato, with a different number of days delay.

Call to be sure.

Typically it's the first 6 billing cycles (the offer doesn't state 6 full months or 180 days). Your first billing cycle may be less than 30 days & if you hit your $15,000 spend in 6 billing cycles you're definitely in the clear, if your $15,000 spend threshold is in your 7th billing cycle then expect to fight (& not necessarily win).

When I activated my card for the Citi Visa, lady said starting date for the 6 months, 4k spending is on day of activation not approval date.
