It's going to depend mostly on your travel pattern. I also consider DL miles pretty worthless, but 60,000 is worth, at a minimum, a last minute domestic flight. If you ever find the need to take one of those, the miles will come in handy.

Seems like you are more interested in a US-Asia trip, however. If you haven't already, try looking at partners like Korean and Malaysian. Also try searching starting in cities other than SFO. I think they now fly from SEA, PDX, and of course cities in the midwest and east coast. An unconventional routing may not show up in the award calender, even if it is available.

Malaysian Airlines is a partner ???????

yes thru NW, just like IT.

you could get some better solutions if this was in the DL forum.

Nah, if it was moved over there, the DL apologists would just tell the OP that his 57k miles are worth GOLD!

Ilove2fly Mar 27, 2010 7:42 pm

No.... Don't move it... I am in the same situation. I can't even give the miles away. They are impossible to use. Thanks to this thread, now i know about the hotel alternative.

Me too ^^^

Looks like 24,000 orphaned NW miles are going towards a hotel purchase.

If you don't have enough miles, you can use miles + $.

Anyone know the details on this? I couldn't find any on the marketplace site.

If you have sufficient status with DL, you can leverage the value further by redeeming, with no fees, for last-minute flights that often cost a lot otherwise, sometimes achieving CPMs of 3+.

DL has awfully high mileage pricing even for domestic trips and DL is the worst airline when it comes to fees applicable to award tickets.

With NW, IT was a partner where you could earn miles/segments good toward NW (and/or even DL) status -- now that's gone with DL.

Where do you see this? I dont see Malaysia as a partner airline anywhere on DL site that says you can redeem SkyMiles on Malaysia Airlines....

Thanks for this tip to get rid of orphan DL miles. It's even possible to use miles+cash at about 1cpm, so perfect for getting rid of every useless mile. Do any other programs have similar hotel portals? I seem to have orphan miles all over the place.

They have tons of hotel choices nearly anywhere in the world and in places where my Starwood or Hilton points are of no help. Now, instead of avoiding skymiles earnings I may just go for more knowing I can use them this way.
There are other merchandise purchasing options too but I think for me, the hotel option is the way to go.
Haven't checked into the car rental option yet but I'm sure most any of these options will be easier to get value from compared with their pitiful flight awards.

But let's not get caught up in that redundant and tired challenging of one another's interpretation of "excellent value".

Nobody can challenge your idea of an excellent value for miles, but in general, using airline miles for hotels yields a relatively poor value, and I can certainly challenge that. :D It might be a good use of orphan miles, or to get out of SkyMiles for good, but that makes it a good idea, not an excellent value.

Care to elaborate? I wouldn't mind being proven wrong on this point! I was able to use up my DL miles for 2 biz tix to Europe, which at 100K each provided an excellent value, but that option is getting harder and harder.

Helena Handbaskets Mar 28, 2010 2:06 pm

If you get a DL Amex, you can use Skymiles to buy tickets at the published price with a value of $0.01 per Skymile. And you can combine miles and cash.
