How long should I wait before reapplying?

I'm trying to get the United Mileage Plus Visa from Chase... for 30k miles. I applied the week I got my BA Visa from Chase in the mail, and was denied :( They sent me a letter saying I had too recent of an application.

I do want the UM+ card... how long should I wait before reapplying? I know you guys can't give legal advice... but what would you suggest/do?

Thanks@!

I don't know if my situation is unique, but i applied for the BA card back in mid December, around the 18th. I applied for the SPG card on Jan 1 and got approved for both right away.

*Before those two cards i haven't applied for any cards in several years though.

Yeah, I think getting approved for cards from diff banks is easier... than applying for both of these from Chase. Am I incorrect in this assumption? I got the Chase BA card, the SPG AmEx, and the Citi AAdvantage cards all within a few weeks of each other already, and then applied for the Chase UM+ card and was denied b/c of too recent of a request (that was the reason in the letter).

I think others have mentioned waiting 6 months for Chase.

These (credit crunch) days, Chase is EXTREMELY difficult to deal with on getting credit card apps approved. Far more so than their competition such as Citi (and Citi is bad enough), so it is some policy beyond the credit crunch.

What are they doing with all that federal money? Obviously not too interested in lending it out.

I would wait at least six months between apps.

Also matters what other Chase cards you have already. Is it just the BA card or do you have others?

Just called to the referrer and reconfirmed about your apps...

I'm not sure if I will get denied/accepted when I do apply again, but here's my situation:

I applied for the BA Visa 12/11/09 and then tried to apply for the Marriott Rewards card (also Chase) a week or so later and I got a letter saying I was denied. I called the number asking why and they told me that their policy is that you cannot apply for another Chase card within 30 days of the application for the previous one. So, they made it seem that even though I may get approved (which I should based on my credit score) for the Marriott card, they don't allow multiple applications within a 30 day period.

Hope that helps.

bdd, welcome to Flyertalk!

Sure you nailed it! There have been reports here indicating what a Chase CSR said: the Chase system would automatically throw out all applications if the previous application was less than 6 months ago. Chase will NOT even re-consider it although you now have a hard-pull record for the next two years.

If you have read the various threads about the Chase credit cards, you would have noticed this restriction. Chase is very tough with CC app. AMEX is around the same level. They are also well-known to have no problem with closing your cards for "unintended" use.

Read through the various threads here to get yourself familiar before jumping into these. It is fun and almost free miles, but there are things to know to protect your credit score/history.

what if I have a targeted offer in the mail? Does that make a difference?
Thanks!

I doubt it. Different departments.

My Application History with Chase

I was approved for Chase cards on 6/25 and 9/9, though the first one was a Business card.

6/25 - United Business Visa APPROVED
6/25 - Priority Club Business Visa DECLINED - report not pulled -too many recent applications
9/9 - Continental Visa APPROVED
11/20 - British Airways DECLINED - Report Pulled - too many active accounts, too many inquiries, too many new accounts

So, they were willing to pull my credit report at least 60 days after my last personal app.

My wife had similar results:

6/25 - Priority Club Busn - APPROVED
6/25 - United Business Visa - DECLINED - Report not Pulled - Too many recent applications
6/25 - Priority Club - DECLINED - Report not Pulled - Too many recent applications
11/6 - British Airways - APPROVED

They seem to treat Business and Personal apps as the same thing, based on the fact that they refused to process a personal app for my wife directly after processing a business app.

The story that you have to wait 30 days between applications may be accurate. I've been waiting at least two months between mine and it seems to work. I don't believe the 6 month policy, since we each were approved for two cards within less than 6 months.

Thanks for the info, jgstecker. I'm glad to see you got approved even with cards less then six months apart. It gives me some hope since the BA deal is back. I got a CO card back in mid-November, so I don't know if I'll be approved or not. I'll be applying later this week and will report back with the results.

It does not matter. Many posters have received targeted offer, applied, only to be rejected.

I am not sure about jgstecker. Have you checked all three of the credit agents? Depending on which part you are located in the US and which card you are applying, the same financial institution will pull from different credit agents. In another thread, posters are saying they even get hard pulls just to open a plain checking account. So it would be interesting to know that a credit card application does NOT trigger a hard pull, which will stay with you for two years. I for one will NOT risk my credit history/score as it is too valuable to me. Then of course, if you decide to take the risk and luck out, then good for you.
