Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

100% agree with you which is probably why I won’t be filing any complaints. I consider myself very lucky to have gotten this ticket, so while it’s disappoitnting, I’m not gonna cry and moan about it. CX was really nice to even honor these fares. It just seems inherently wrong for them to not abide by the T&C’s. They’re either honoring the tickets or not...

I just played with date change a bit on CX website and it seems I could change my DAD-JFK flight to Feb 13th with a nominal fee. I did not go through though so not sure if it would error out in the end which would require a call as someone reported earlier.

I still don’t understand why they don’t want any of these reservations being changed. I think they actually did something to my itinerary so that the orbitz people cannot even access the fare buckets that are available.
I’ll give you an example. I’m traveling over Memorial Day weekend, the flight is completely full in first class (both ways) and I want to change to a random weekend where it has an open first class cabin. You’d think CX would want me to do this to free up space on a full route where they have a good chance to sell the seats. So why they’re insistent on everyone keeping their days I don’t get, but whatever.
As we all said we’re happy that they’re honoring these tickets, and I am very grateful to be getting one in the first place.
On a completely unrelated note, do FTers want to meet up? Someone can put me down for Feb 16 SGN-JFK returning February 18th JFK-SGN.

I still don’t understand why they don’t want any of these reservations being changed. I think they actually did something to my itinerary so that the orbitz people cannot even access the fare buckets that are available.
I’ll give you an example. I’m traveling over Memorial Day weekend, the flight is completely full in first class (both ways) and I want to change to a random weekend where it has an open first class cabin. You’d think CX would want me to do this to free up space on a full route where they have a good chance to sell the seats. So why they’re insistent on everyone keeping their days I don’t get, but whatever.
As we all said we’re happy that they’re honoring these tickets, and I am very grateful to be getting one in the first place.

Yeah, okay but they’re honoring the ticket. So if they’re gonna honor it, they don’t want to move me off a full F flight? That doesn’t makes sense.

Sure - if you end up travelling on Memorial day they will lose the seat. But they're willing to call your bluff at the moment.

Can anyone with experience help to confirm about the visa situation.
Will be flying from HKG to DAD on jet star arriving 5 hours prior to the departure and having a valid visa. This is ok with the airline, and immigration, right? Wanted to make sure this is not the same day turn that I heard some ppl saying to be illegal.

Reporting live from the BA lounge at EWR.
Ended up talking to 4 different people to try to change the last leg of my journey to a new date and got different answers every time. First person told me that I have to change both legs of the return journey and can't just change one, the second one told me that I can't build in a stopover but revised the statement later and told me that I could build in a day max. Was also told a bunch of other untrue "facts" about what the fare rules allow and what they don't, however they tried to back away from their argumentations when I confronted them with the actual fare rules. Ticket office told me that I couldn't change the date because there needs to be fare class availability for both sectors of the return journey and that apparently there was none for my selected dates, although one of the Facebook social media reps confirmed to me that there is and also ExpertFlyer was showing plenty of availability....shame to him that thinks evil of it ;-)
Then surprisingly at check-in I requested again to change the date of the 2nd leg and after quickly double-checking with the supervisor they took care of it within 2min without me even paying a rebooking fee!
In essence: Changes to the ticket can definetly be done!

SIN-DAD, DAD-SIN via the transit desk / staying in transit / not clearing immigration/customs - NOT allowed.
SIN-DAD, DAD-SIN after going through immigration/customs - ALLOWED
SIN-DAD, DAD-HKG via the transit desk / staying in transit / not clearing immigration/customs - ALLOWED

A friend of mine is flying in on CX F on Friday to HKG. His connecting flight is the next day (arrives 7PM, flight to DAD is 8AM). I arrive at the same time as him, but on HX, connecting on HX.
He booked a separate ticket on Air Asia, so he'll be able to reclear and enter the terminal. Will he be able to get into the CX F lounge too, even though is connection (in the eyes of CX) is the next day, ~ 12 hours from then. If he does, I assume he'd be able to guest me in? From what I've read on CX's website, any CX F passenger can have a 'guest'. It doesn't specify that the guest must be flying on OneWorld like it does if you're using OneWorld status to enter.
