Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

can someone with EF or a HAN to SFO itinerary booked through CX site check to see if there is any first class availability on HAN - HKG - SFO on Feb 9 or 10th? I booked through orbitz and when i try to change outbound flight to a day or two later, it is quoting me nearly 2k more and dropping me down to biz class. thanks in advance!

FWIW it looks like tickets booked via CX directly aren't showing space available on the longhauls, even though expertflyer shows it. Not sure if things are different for travel agencies.
There was a brief window when they started opening up A space again via married segments where changes were possible on CX.com for $100, but, along with opening more than 1 A seat on each flight, they seem to have done something different where the change flights button (and even phone agents) can't see the A space even though it shows up in expertflyer now.
I called CX, and the agent wasn't able to find A availability on any day, regardless of what expertflyer says. So it looks like folks with tickets booked directly with CX are out of luck for the time being. Don't know about changes to shorthaul segments.
There was a brief window when they started opening up A space again via married segments where changes were possible on CX.com for $100, but, along with opening more than 1 A seat on each flight, they seem to have done something different where the change flights button (and even phone agents) can't see the A space even though it shows up in expertflyer now.
I called CX, and the agent wasn't able to find A availability on any day, regardless of what expertflyer says. So it looks like folks with tickets booked directly with CX are out of luck for the time being. Don't know about changes to shorthaul segments.

It's true. I booked in C for the the flights and was able to make change for very swift of time few days earlier (lucky me) without hike up the price or change fee, but no longer able to do it today. CX would able to find ways to block the cheap tickets to make changes but still allowing new customer to purchase available seats.

Just speculating, but there might be a specific override to treat these as (cheap) business tickets in the case of a flight change.

It indeed looks like they did some special coding on the backend. From what I can see, if I attempt a change online now, it only shows Business inventory... there isn't even an option to select First seats and pay the $33k difference. Just speculating, but there might be a specific override to treat these as (cheap) business tickets in the case of a flight change.

It’s seems as if they have removed A class availability on the married segments, that had been previously available. I can’t see any A class availability (for example) From DAD to JFK and back on any of the dates around my ticket, yesterday there was availability on everyday.
Should have pulled the change trigger when I could have. Kicking myself now! 🙈

Sorry if this has been answered clearly before (I read through the thread and couldn't find a definitive answer): should I be able to change the HKG-HAN leg of my itinerary if there's J space available on a different flight the same day but no more A space on the HKG-SFO flight I'm already booked on?

The only CX flights available those two days is a KA codeshare 10th... CX5294 at J3 C0 D0 I0. All other CX/KA flights are J0.
