Enough details should be given to entice the MR to learn more, but not enough so that the airlines know exactly what the routing/fare/rules that are being bended are so that they can close it immediately. Some might say it's a fine line, but I don't think so...not if we really compose our posts about these runs with some care. How motivated are the airlines in shutting down these fares? Will they act on an explicit routing but not on one that requires some leg work? An executive who is going to send off a "kill this" email to a subordinate can do so with either. Does limiting the routing just prevent the newbie from getting in on a fare that will die anyway? Given that newbies become serious FT members over time and with experience, will frustrating them and not showing them how increadible the rewards can be reduce the "new blood" that every community needs. I confess I found this community rather anemic at times. This is only an issue if you enjoy getting or giving help to or from others. And if you aren't either of those, then you don't need the FT community anyway. |

If the justification for this anti-social behavior is the fear that lurking airline agents will discover and repair routings posted on FT, then the OP's compromise (which is well intended) will fail because agents are just as prepared to research routing as any regular FT member. It may make the job a bit tougher, but they can still kill the deal. Ultimately, IMHO, if you are not community minded and don't like sharing and teaching so you can similarly receive and learn, then stay off FT. Don't come around boasting of the great deals you know of, but won't disclose, because the rest of us aren't worthy of you knowledge. I look at it from the perspective that more people looking for MR's will mean more opporunities will come up. Sure, they won't last as long, but it's a zero-sum game in the end. Steve |

Steve I, for one, have helped Newbees when I have been PMed. And I will continue to do so. I want to share! I want to share in the way that will benefit the most FTers over the longest period of time. I am convinced the most FTers will benefit the most by not posting the best routings, but sharing them other ways. I think the following post would be in order, for example (not true): PHP Code:
The question is not to share or not...rather how to share so the most FTers benefit in the long run. |
I think the last poster made a good point that I'd like to reiterate: Things like specific routing rules do not tend to change, and when someone finds a large loophole in them and finds a way to be creative with it, the airline is bound to find it and close it. Things like regular mileage runs, and even mistake fares/hotels I think are fine to be openly discussed within the FT community. Especially MR stuff. But I might take some issue if we hash out every detail of a legal routing, for example, that allows for some major "exploitation", if you will. Those kinds of things, if discussed very openly, should be discussed with care. All I need to do is reference a recent post about a run from MKE for a lot of miles and I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about. Perfectly legal routings and rules, etc., just like a normal MR. Now...try and book that one. I don't think you can anymore, as I think the airline has found out and closed it. Just a little care is needed in our posts, I think. Not restricting info on purpose, that's not in the spirit of FT. But being wise about how much info we expose for everyone to see without any legwork of their own...that we need to be watchful, IMO.
I hope people take some of these thoughts into consideration. I'm concerned about others being able to take advantage of these deals an not just having people find the deals, exploit them, book them, and open up every detail to the world. If it gets closed, so be it, as they've already booked theirs. This is what I don't want to see FT become. |
