Transportation options from HGH to Hangzhou city center or PVG. Please add your name and your itinerary if you are interested in meeting other fellow FTers.
1) Taxi to Hangzhou city center, about 100 RMB ($15) for the entire party, not per person, walking from international terminal to domestic terminal (i.e., right turn after you get outside of the international terminal building), you will see taxi queue.
2) Shuttle bus, 20 RMB ($3), to Wulinmen CAAC Ticket Office or East Railway Station Line (two most popular options). The waiting hall for the shuttle bus is at Gate 10 (you can purchase ticket at Gate 14, too) Arrival Hall, on the first floor of the terminal building. Further details, see https://www.travelchinaguide.com/cit...ation.htm#hang
3) Shuttle from Hangzhou city center to PVG, 110 RMB, 3.5 hours: a) Wulinmen Ticket Office Central Hangzhou to PVG: (5:30, 6:10, 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00)
b) Hangzhou Dragon Sports Center to PVG, 110 RMB, (7:00, 8:30, 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, 16:00
). Further details, see https://traveladept.com/bus-pudong-hangzhou/
4) Train from Hangzhou East station to Shanghai Hongqiao; less than 100 RMB (~1 hr); then you can take Subway Line #2 to PVG, ~10 RMB and 2 hrs; or shuttle bus (Airport Line #1), about 1 hr, 30 RMB ($4.5), every 15 - 25 minutes. The Hangzhou East ticketing windows are located on 1st Floor, EAST Area of the station. Please allow 20-30 minutes for walking to 2nd floor departure, and security check. The frequency of Hangzhou-Hongqiao trains is as good as that of subways in many US cities.
5) Getting cash at HGH The international terminal at HGH (where you arrive) only has an exchange vendor with hefty fees that is open limited hours. However, the adjacent domestic terminal has a bank ATM. To get to the entrance of the domestic terminal, exit the international terminal and keep walking right, past the taxi stand. Then enter and take the escalator to the second floor. The bank ATM will be on your left, next to the escalator.
6 Getting TWOV without issues The advice is to print out your itinerary, hotel reservation, etc., to speed up the procedure at the entry point in China. At SFO, the check-in agents were clueless, so be prepared to get there very early and fight for your boarding passes. Please read the last few pages on this thread for first-hand experiences. Good luck. There is a thread on FT for further details. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/china...hread-231.html

ATM To get to the entrance of the domestic terminal, exit the international terminal and keep walking right, past the taxi stand. Then enter and take the escalator to the second floor. The bank ATM will be on your left, next to the escalator.

Travel information for Beijing and airport:
Beijing will have 2 hubs starting Sept 30,2019. PEK (Beijing Capital International Airport) is original main hub and will continue for Star Alliance flights and Cathay Pacific (including subsidiary Cathay Dragon Air). PKX (Beijing Daxing International Airport, will debut Sept 30, 2019)
planned for airlines of the SkyTeam alliance and One World Alliance (AA, BA, etc. except Cathay Pacific) will be relocated to the new airport. Most flyers taking advantage of this China OJ deal will continue fly through PEK. Some people who use positioning flights through Beijing using non-Star Alliance airlines need to make sure you are flying into PEK, or else need 2hr ground transportation from PKX to PEK.
PEK allows TWOV within 24hr to stay inside security zone airside. This is more convenient for immediate turn than Shanghai-PVG, which force all passengers to exit immigration and customs, then re-check in from land side, even if you have immediate turn within 24hr.

i searched fare with ITA Matrix. Through bookwithmatrix.com, I booked with Priceline. Priceline gave me until 26Mar18 ~11pm to cancel for free. I actually cancelled two other fares like this.

Misconnected from yesterday's 869. UC agent at SFO refused to rebook despite already announced 45 minute delay reducing my connection time to 40 mins claiming that I would be right next to the gate for my departure flight to HGH (what...did she think I was connecting at SAL). We arrived even later and upon deplaning there was a sign with my name and I was escorted to the UA transfer counter and rebooked on the morning KA flight to HGH and given 118 HKD food voucher and hotel voucher for the airport Regal even though UA app showed reason for delay as weather....so good for UA here (the actual reason for the delay as announced by captain on board was aircraft refueling difficulties)

So it is confirmed. If someone can please add me to the Wiki Post Travel List with the following itinerary:
Sun Apr 01 Burlington to Hong Kong
BTV to IAD 09:30 AM - 11:16 AM United Airlines Flight 3774
IAD to EWR 12:44 PM - 02:10 PM United Airlines Flight 4922
EWR to HKG 03:15 PM - 07:10 PM United Airlines Flight 179
Mon Apr 02 Hong Kong to Hangzhou
HKG to HGH 08:10 PM - 10:30 PM Cathay Dragon Flight 622
Wed Apr 04 Shanghai to Montreal
PVG to SFO 12:30 AM - 08:35 PM United Airlines Flight 890
SFO to IAD 11:28 PM - 07:35 AM United Airlines Flight 697
IAD to LGA 08:15 AM - 09:33 AM United Airlines Flight 6255
LGA to YUL 10:40 AM - 12:04 PM United Airlines Flight 8183

I was worried about the short 1 hr layover in HKG to catch the KA flight to HGH. But from previous quote, UA should handle it. Thanks for the post.

Questions:
  1. If I arrive to HGH Monday at 10:30pm as planned, any recommended economic lodging?
  2. Which transportation method do you recommend from Hangzhou to PVG? My flight is at 12:30am Wednesday (basically Tuesday night). How soon should I arrive at PVG? Is there any time for a quick sightseeing in Shanghai?
Thanks

There's a brand new Holiday Inn Express by Hangzhou east station that can be had for 350 CNY per night...you can take the bus from the airport for 20 CNY or taxi for about 100. In the morning, head to the east rail station and buy the next ticket to Shanghai Hongqiao (they leave every 10 minutes). At Hongqiao train station, take Metro Line 2, which goes all the way to the airport. If you want to sightsee, you can get off at some stations in the middle like Nanjing East Road (the bund), People's Square, Lujiazui and when you'r done, just head back to the subway station and continue travelling on Line 2 to the airport. If you're not at least Silver or *G, arrive 3hrs ahead because all passengers must undergo manual check in in China, otherwise 2hrs should be enough.

Can you still get a HKG-China flight bundled with this? I'm trying to price LAX-HKG-HGH PVG-YYZ in early May but everything with a HKG-China flight goes up to around 700. Would rather have it bundled together for around 400 than buy another ticket. I already have a visa for China so anything is possible.

Sample for dates I'm looking at:
https://www.google.com/flights/#flt=...001*.USD.34001

The Sunday from Hangzhou to Shanghai trains tend to be sold out. An alternative is to take the shuttle from HGH to Wulinmen and then another shuttle to PVG (3 hrs plus).

ps: if you take PVG-SFO flight at 12:15 am tonight, we can meet at Air China lounge after 6:30 pm.

you can actually pre-book the train on Trip.com (a HK app/site). there is a booking fee though...

Thanks for the feedback.

For lodging I might instead redeem the DoubleTree Hangzhou East for 20K points and use my Diamond privileges. Although will need to verify that points would be reimbursed in case of no show due to missed flight from HKG-HGH.
Through Expedia, I was even able to find hotels for 0$. LOL Don’t think will risk it though. FYI, Holiday Inn Hangzhou Xiaoshan is at 53 CAD.

I would be leaving Hangzhou for Shanghai on Tuesday, so hope the train is ok.
Kpmx, will you be at PVG Tuesday night April 3rd?

I have used ctrip.com in China to book trains (not sure if it is the same as trip.com). Yes, there is a small fee, but well worth it. Very easy to use. You book online, get a confirmation number. Then show your confirmation number and passport at the ticket counter in the station, and they will give you the ticket. Highly recommended.

The one I'm looking for is like this:

https://www.google.com/flights/#flt=...;sd:1;t:f;tt:m

However, no matter how hard I played around the date, I couldn't get anything cheaper than 900. Thanks.

Just take out the HKG-HGH flight in the google flight search you posted, and the price drops to $495CAD. I'm sure you can find a one way flight from HKG-HGH for a reasonable price. Is that what you're trying to do?

Here's the link for the cheaper flight: https://www.google.com/flights/#flt=...;sd:1;t:f;tt:m

Don't forget to include Shenzhen and Guangzhou as alternates to a flight from HKG. Also check directly on the website for Spring Airlines, they fly SZX - SHA (not PVG).

if you do SZX-SHA it may require visa. The TWOV is only applicable on flights directly into the Yangtze delta region. When you try to enter SZX you may be denied due to lack of visa.
but: I love SHA, close to city, much easier transportation methods, better flight times, and no crazy crowding issues like PVG.

I have one of these flights coming up with a tight (1 hour) connection in HKG onwards to CAN. Does anyone have experience with this? Will there be ground staff waiting at the gate?
