I had similar itineraries priced in $450s from the east coast (WAS, NYC).

I just replaced LAX with WAS in the search above. Routes back through IAD :)

Well, I am not an expert on fare rule. If you can digest the fare rule for LAX-SFO-HKG, you may get some hints for the possible east coast originating flights. The RIC-HKG-XIY outbound may have a different fare rule from that of LAX-HKG outbound. You can get the fare rule on ITA Matrix search or united.com.
Good luck.

P.S.: If you do not mind scratching your head, here is a thread on fare rule/construction. https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/united-airlines-mileageplus/1914757-need-lesson-fare-quote-married-segments.html

Also works for BTV (Burlington Vermont), so for any Canadians from Montreal or Ottawa or Americans from Northeastern USA this works out fairly well:

Change the link above to start at ORD and it works, pricing out at $351. Non-stop both ways to HKG and return PEK non-stop to ORD.

If you start out at SFO and end up in YVR then it prices to $299. SFO to HKG is nonstop. PEK to YVR has a stop in SFO.

So this wouldn’t qualify for TWOV to go from HKG-XIY then for me to get a flight from XIY-PEK then onto PEK-ORc correct?

correct , no TWOV if you make internal flight in PRC.

That is incorrect. TWOV is still possible for routings that include domestic connections - but in such cases the restriction is no more than 24 hours total inside China (and I think also a maximum of two internal flights).

Apologies to ElJudioErrante Just double checked by looking at Timatic, and it does look like the "24 hours/multiple stops inside China" TWOV option is no longer allowed. I wonder when that changed. Will investigate further ...

Follow up ... It seems that China now offers a (free) "Transit Visa on Arrival (TVOA) to cover at least some routings that previously would have been covered by the "TWOV 24 hour/multiple stops" allowance. This is fairly new so not many reports on FT about this yet. but it looks at least that it will be okay for the question raised above (i.e arrive from HKG into XIY and leave from PEK to USA with a domestic connection inside China and less than 24 hours between arrival into XIY and departure from PEK). More details in the Destinations/China TWOV/TVOA thread - latest post here https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/29634062-post4270.html

Anyone saw reverse routing for this fare? Leaving from Hong Kong or China to US?

Well, the deal is back and I was able not only to land in Hong Kong instead of China, but also to include the Island Hopper. All for 358 USD.

LAX-HND-HKG / PEK-HND / NRT-GUM / GUM-TKK-PNI-KSA-KWA-MAJ-HNL / HNL-SFO-IAD-YUL

I'm truly amazed that the United website actually had no trouble at all with this creative routing :D

Has anyone been able to recreate this? I'd love to do this but the link doesn't work.

This exact schedule works for me as I can just hop off at SFO on the way back and take a cheap flight back to LAX. Couldn't recreate on GF.

Any chance you (or anyone else) have seen anything for the island hopper for next year? I can't afford the time off for a trip this year! :(
