I don't know how people cannot use up VIPs. I have used all 16 of mine for the past 2 years to SYD, GIG, GRU, HKG, PVG, DUB, HND, I don't think I've ever been refused at the gate.

I don't know how you assume that everyone has as much luck as you on clearing their SWUs. I have personally been on many flights where my SWU did not clear, even at the gate.

I'm 8/8 for SWU's, all of them asked at the check-in counter, without applying it before hand ( as I try to tell myself to save the upgrades for gifting, but I end up saying F economy once at the airport :rolleyes: ). I think they call the rate desk and if there are seats available, they'll push it through before it goes to gate agent.

All applied out of LAX and DFW.
