Andy's is my favorite (on Hubbard), as well as Jilly's (on Rush). Redhead used to be great but I haven't been there in a few years. For great after hours music try the Underground Wonder Bar (on Walton, just east of State, ground level)

For pure true jazz the finest (repeat the finest) venue in the city is the Jazz Showcase at 59 W. Grand Ave just east of Clark http://www.jazzshowcase.com/ This will please the hard core guy.

Andy’s has some good stuff, but dare I say (yes I dare) it is more pop/smooth jazz offerings.

For a dive that reeks of atmosphere my second favorite place is the Green Mill (far north side) 4802 N Broadway St. Place has not been redecorated in 50 years (and it looks like it). Great mixed, unusual crowd.
Great Talent plays here.

The general liquor license in the city has a closing time of 2AM (3 on Saturday). A "4AM" license allows a closing time of 4AM (5 on Saturday). My understanding is that a 4AM is much more expensive, so you'll usually see only a couple in any given area. Often, such places will be pretty empty around midnight, but then be absolutely jammed come 2AM when everything else closes.

There used to be an after hours bar near the DePaul area called Deja Vu (not the strip club), anyone know if this is still open?
