International air travel [D to I transfer at ORD]
 

I am looking at travelling from Miami to Dublin. If i book a flight on Aer Lingus with the Miami flight to O'Hare on United then the O'Hare leg to Dublin on Aer Lingus, will I need to re-clear security in Chicago? Mind you this is one ticket booked on Aer Lingus site, not two separate tickets or reservations.

What if the flight is on Delta straight through or Delta with their partner Air France or KLM?


FWIW, someone on tripadvisor says yes you have to re-clear security but I called the TSA and they say no - not as long as I do not leave the secure area when changing terminals, so who is right?

You can transfer airside to Aer Lingus, Air France, or KLM without re-clearing security. It's a rather long walk, but not terrible.
The bus runs from gates K20 and G17 to Terminal 5.

You do need a boarding card to take the bus, so be absolutely certain to check in with Aer Lingus and have some sort of documentation.

The bus runs from 10:30 am to 8:00 pm.

United does have an interline agreement with Aer Lingus, so you should be able to check your bags all the way through to Dublin, as long as it is a single ticket.


On the way back to the USA, try to avoid Chicago. Their flights arrive at Terminal 5, which means that you must re-clear security upon arrival. Aer Lingus flights that arrive in many other US airports arrive as domestic flights. If you take Aer Lingus to Boston, you will arrive at terminal C as a domestic passenger, Miami terminal F, Newark terminal B, JFK terminal 5, San Francisco (terminals are connected), Seattle (terminals are connected), LAX terminal 2, Washington/Dulles (terminals are connected), Orlando (terminals are connected).

If you're aiming to take Aer Lingus connecting to United on the way back to the USA, Dulles or Newark are your best bets if you cannot get on the nonstop to Miami. (There is a airside bus connecting terminals B and C at Newark).

Have a good trip to Ireland, and--I hope--an easy transit through Chicago.

I don't know when you are flying but if it is sometime in 2018 you may have the bus running from T1 to T5.

It looks like UA is going to get on board with the shuttle to T5. Check out post #92 in the following thread.

I've seen reps meet connecting UA to T5 (Star Alliance) passengers right on their arriving T1 Jetway to be shuttled over. Who knows if this is some kind of *A policy or if there's any reasonable expectation of being offered this service but it exists at least for some.
