Buffalo resturants
 

I'm going to up in buffalo visiting this girl who I'm friends with.I wanted to take her out to a nice dinner and was curious if anyone could suggest a place.

I see this topic was moved to mid-atlantic from dining. Seems someone needs a map - Buffalo is located in the northeast (as is the rest of NYS). Anyhoooooooo


How much would you like to spend on "nice"? None of these are cheap:

EB Greens is a Top 10 steak house (national rating) (downtown)

Rue Franklin is an excellent French resteraunt (downtown)

Oliver's is located in North Buffalo.

Buffalo Chop House

Less expensive but still not cheap:

Harry's Harbour is all about the view! (riverside)

Shanghai Reds is a newer place on the pier. I am not a fan (loud crowd). The food is ok, the views are fabulous, the crowd is younger. (downtown)

If you need a suburban location, please post what area and I can make a few recommendations north of the city. I am not familiar with the southtowns.

Thanks xamas for all your work but she decided she wanted to goto the olive garden :rolleyes:. I guess to some people that's a big deal??

I've eaten at all that you have mentioned, some more than once. :) EB's was once the best bet downtown for a steak, but ever since the Chophouse opened up, instead of rising to the challenge, they kinda slunk away. I would not recommend. The Chop House is great for a crowd on expense accounts, but I find it a little pricey, especially for Buffalo. Food is very good and the service is fine, but I prefer a couple of other choices in the downtown area.

1 http://www.tempobuffalo.com/ Tempo very fine Northern Italian food on Delaware avenue. I've eaten there several times and always left pleased.

2. Mother's. A fantastic hole in the wall on a side street off of Delaware, just north of downtown. Fantastic food at great prices. I've dined here with customers and we have enjoyed way too much food and wine and the bill looks like you had apps and shared a beer. Fun, trendy crowd--highly recommend. Ignore the regular menu and go straight to the specials.

I'd never eat at the Chop House but that is an owner driven opinion, not chef driven. :) I personally love EB Green's. Anytime I can haul the hubby downtown for a dinner I drag him there.

Mother's "ambiance" is certainly different. If you are going to troll Allentown, I'd hit Fat Bob's first. I'm not a fan of any of their meats (I realize I'm in a minority) but their side dishes are worth the calories! Certainly both spots are dives. I'm not certain I'd ever recommend taking a date there.

To some people, Olive Garden is a big deal if they never get to go, between price, friends don't like it, etc.

Wow, I've been in a lot of dives, and I would never consider Mother's a dive. Most nights it has been a well dressed professional crowd either having a drink after work or staying for dinner. Some nights I have felt under dressed in slacks and a blazer. Are we talking about the same place? The crowd always reminded me of an average spot on the upper east side of Manhattan.

Virginia Place down the block from Fat Bob's?

Rue Franklin is great and actually not that expensive if you can do the Prix Fixe Tues-Thurs. I used to eat there once a month when I lived in BUF.

While flyertalk may list New York in the mid Atlantic region, it is not located in that geographic area. The mid Atlantic region is PA, NJ, MD, DE, WV and VA. However I doubt I am the first to point this error out over the years.

When I saw "Buffalo restaurants" in this forum I thought it was an inquiry about where to go get buffalo meat, perhaps around DC. :D

Regardless, Buffalo's restaurant scene is still "challenged" (to say the least); and although it has improved a bit over the past several years, the joke still runs that the best meal in Buffalo is to be found in Canada. :D Some jokes just don't die. :D

In Buffalo, the restaurant Bacchus perhaps?

Of course if you go to Buffalo you have to have Buffalo wings!

The Anchor Bar also has a pretty decent menu of pasta and other dishes. Most people of course go for the wings.

Prices are not bad either.

There are also a few restaurants around the Hampton Inn and Suites (a very nice Hampton IMHO) but I have not been to them. They are trying to build up that part of the neighborhood. (There's also a Starbucks too.)

I love the anchor bar. They are the original, and IMO the best. The pizza there borders on disgusting (ok, it tips over into disgusting). Starbucks! No no, go to Tim Horton's, Catman. The local joke is you could build a Tim Horton's next to a Tim Horton's here and they'd both make money. It is probably true. :p


GUWonder, it may be a matter of what you are used to, but I would disagree with your statement. I too travel a great deal and Buffalo restaurants do not suffer when compared to restaurants in other American cities.
