1st time visit to DC

What's your favorite CHEAP restaurant in DC?
MID-PRICE?
TOP-END?
I'm making a list. We will be in DC for 5 days, so I want to make best use of our time. Got my maps, AAA book, Lonely Planet book.......Should I get an Entertainment Book?
(any restaurants to avoid????

a search (upper right hand corner of page) using DC will yield MANY threads on suggestions.

One in particular that is favored by FT'ers is this one: http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdi...ML/000037.html

I think it will address the good value you are looking for.

Consider getting a Zagat Guide. With but one or two major exceptions, I find it quite accurate. I am not a fan of Kinkead, Galileo, Nora, or Taberna on the top end restaurants.
Maestro cooks well, and is noisy.
Citronell cooks best, and can be noisy.
Melrose cooks very well, and is quiet. Fri and Sat night has dancing to a nice band.

Have not been to Vidalia since recreated, but Jeff Bubin knows how to cook.

For mid range, try Jaleo(noisy) or Andale.

We have recently enjoyed Marcel's (Pennsylvania near 24th) and Butterfield 9 (14th near Pennsylvania). both would be considered moderately priced, the first being French with a Belgian flair and the second featuring New American cuisine.

akap16isme Nov 21, 2003 7:52 pm

Wow, I'd like to dine with our friend who thinks Marcel's is midrange! If you call 30-40 dollar entrees (granted delicious) midrange...

Anyway,

Cheap: Skewers, Meskerem, Aditi, Basil Thai

Midrange: Upstairs in Red Sage, Cafe Divan

Upperrange: Downstairs in Red Sage http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdi...orum/smile.gif

Brunches: Nathan;s in Gtown, J Pauls... and my ABSOLULTE FAVORITE!! TABARD INN on N between 17 and 18 http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdi...orum/smile.gif

ati2d Nov 22, 2003 7:43 pm

GREAT! We'll try as many as we can & let you know.

Glad you enjoyed B9.

I'm a little bit biased, but they've really improved and become top notch in the last couple of months. New chef has absolutely transformed the menu.

Also definitely one to have on the list for pre-theatre.

I like Tabard Inn, esp outside on a nice day.

I'm a big fan of Bistro Bis for brunch, too. $20 for 3 courses, anything on the menu, arguably the best deal in town. Same chef as Vidalia.

DOES ANYONE KNOW ANTHING ABOUT ANY OF THESE RESTAURANTS IN Washington DC:
La Colline
The Front Page
Teatro Goldoni
Burrito Brothers (M Street Location)

Inexpensive for DC French food. Not in the downtown area. Not in French decor. Decent, not spectacular food with French flair. Definitely not Haute Cuisine.

The Front Page

Sort of a sports bar with food. Acceptable food. Lots of small rooms. Decent decor for what it is. Not terribly expensive.

Teatro Goldoni

If it is still there, a very overpriced presumptus noisy place. Very Expensive. I think the food there is a joke.

Burrito Brothers (M Street Location)

Never been.

Thanks for the feed-back. We're definately going to check out the others on this thread, too.

I'm a fan of the Front Page for midpriced restaurants and Sequoia for high-end which is on the Potomac.

The Front Page wine dinners(if still around) are one of the best deals in DC. Great price for quite decent food and wine.

I wouldn't consider Sequoia to be fine dining by any standard.

The atmosphere sitting outside on a nice day is wonderful, howver.

One goes to Sequoia to sit outside on the water. Oh, and they have food. But it's nothing special.

Since I live smack in the middle of Dupont Circle, I'm biased :-)

1. Wrapworks (Corner of Connecticut and Q)
2. Chipotle (Connecticut btwn Q and R)

Weather permitting, grab your burritos from the above locations and find a place to sit in Dupont Circle. Great people watching location!

3. Raku (reasonably priced Asian at 19th and Q - spring rolls here are quite good)
4. The Diner (On 18th but in Adams Morgan - great place for a cheap brunch)
5. Peppers (On 17th btwn P and Q somewhere - fabulous pretzel crusted chicken entree)
6. City Lights of China (on Connecticut between R and S - arguably the best Chinese in DC - be sure to get the steamed veggie dumplings)
7. Penang (19th and M - great ambiance and curries)

BeautifulFeet Dec 31, 2003 1:35 pm

Near Dupont Circle I like Bistro du Coin. Great mussles. They have real dessert cheeses.

I can certainly agree with the Big Deal restaurants (and would probably add the Inn at Little Washington to the list... but then again, it's 1.5 hours from DC) but Palena and Galileo are both not cheap. Good value for money, maybe, but certainly not cheap.

"Cheap" (and good) local spots IMO are: Komi, Firefly, Pizzeria Paradiso, Cashion's Eat Place, etc.

EricH Oct 26, 2004 4:53 pm

The Palena reference must be to their cafe menu, served at the tables near their window and on the street (in season). The main restaurant is definitely not cheap, but very good.

scubadiver Oct 28, 2004 5:02 pm

Try www.washingtonian.com for cheap eats

Other posters have hit the high spots in the upscale range, although I'd always add Vidalia as the best price-performar in up-price eateries.

The Washingtonian's cheap eats guide is online and pretty reliable. The alternate is Tyler Cowan's ethnic dining guide. I don't always agree with his reviews, but I love his point of view.

slawecki Oct 29, 2004 12:00 pm

This is a right decent list of inexpensive restaurants in DC.

http://www.washingtonian.com/dining/100bbindex.html

A lot of foodies disagree with the Washingtonian reviews, but this is a good first cut.
