90min at IAD, enough?
Hi folks,
arriving at IAD from Germany onto LH somewhere on B45-49. Connection Flight with UA to Florida departs 90min later at D10. Have to declare customs and baggage. Is it possible to catch the flight? Guess i will be one of the first to deboard, cause i am travelling Business Class. UA flight will be in coach. Any input will help. Thanks a lot |

If two and baggage not checked through, then challenging. https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unit...ional-iad.html |
travelling confirmed on LH and as nonrev standby on UA. Can check in at FRA for UA and they will check my baggage until destination. But have to pick up the bags for immigration and customs at IAD anyhow. |

If they are checking your baggage to final then you are a connecting passenger for immigration/customs activities. That matters at IAD as those are handled at the mid-field CBP facility instead of the main terminal. You should be fine.

Where is the midfield CBP located? |
Trying to post a map link |
OP - When you offload at IAD, you will be directed to midfield CBP if a connecting passenger and to the main CBP at international arrivals if not connecting. After processing (CBP and security checkpoint), you will emerge on the C concourse and walk to your new UA gate. If indeed your departure gate is D10 (highly unlikely to be certain until 2-3 hours prior to departure), it will be a hike, but easy to find. The C & D concourses are the same long concourse, with one end labeled C and the other D.
The standby on UA is a potential glitch here. Make 100% certain at check-in that your bag is tagged to its final UA destination. Even though you must cart it through CBP in all instances, if it is tagged as a connecting bag, you will go to CBP midfield for processing. If your bag is only tagged to IAD, it will be directed to international arrivals and you will reclaim it there. Depending on the day of the week, time of day, your citizenship and whether you have Global Entry, I see a 90-minute connection as tough. A lot depends on the consequences of a misconnect. When is the next flight and is there availability if you misconnect? You will, of course, be rebooked, but LH cannot manufacture space for you. |
Ok, thanks for your input. D10 was the most common gate for the flight the last days, that’s why I named it. Will arrive on a Monday at 4pm local time and I am German citizen. The bags will be definitely labeled to the final UA destination. Missconnex would mean another 6 1/2 hours transit at IAD. |

So does that mean I have to proceed back to the main terminal? I will be checked in before landing at IAD. So i am listed and in the stby list. |
You’ll be checking in with LH if you are on an LH flight. I’m not sure they will through check on a separate ticket. And of course is LH is late then none of this matters. |
OP is traveling nonrev standby on the domestic UA segment.
I would by no means plan on having the bags checked through by LH and if OP "misconnects" (to the extent that this is all on one ticket), there won't be any rebooking beyond rolling over to the next flight, presumably still nonrev standby. OP is simply going to have to leave this to check-in and either go to midfield or international arrivals depending on whether his bag is checked to IAD or to his standby destination. |
