787 Landing at DCA
http://www.flickr.com/photos/theboei...ny/7153000661/
Think we can get the perimeter rules loosened to allow for some new routes: DCA-LHR DCA-FRA DCA-NRT ? |
Wow, that was low over Gravelly Point! ARLnow has some details, like "media only tours."
I assume it's parked at the south end of the airport -- wonder if it's visible from the economy parking lot. |
did that thing fly out today? something with huge twin engines came out just before noon. very slow and very high climb rate. no noise. i vote to pave from the start of graveley point to the wilson bridge. 20,000 ft runway.

The WAMU report said that it would be there for a few days. Scuttlebutt elsewhere on the web indicates that it was just ferried over from IAD and would be here through Friday. I'll see if I can run over for a look sometime this week.
A video from Boeing showing tour groups of students and Boeing employees aboard, plus the presser with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood: http://www.newairplane.com/787/dream.../washingtonDC/ |
I'd love to get out to DCA when it departs. If anyone learns of the time/date I'd love to see it?
|
Went to DCA yesterday. The Dreamliner is there between the A and B Terminals (near the USO Club). It departs Friday (11th) between 10 and 11 AM... or that's what the Boeing rep I spoke with said. ^

I ran by the airport yesterday (on the way home) - the tail is visible from the Mt Vernon trail (you'll see the huge 787 logo), but not much else is visible - or I couldn't see it as I wasn't going terribly slow.
Maybe a good place to see it (without tickets to a flight) would be the walkway between the Old & New terminals where you get a view on the rocking chairs?!? Anyone with details? I'll be at home waiting for the sucker to take off on Friday, hoping to snap some pictures, but would only see it if it takes off to the North. -jeremy |

I'll be there Friday to see it go. Either at the Marina to the south or Gravelly Point to the north. |
They held tours for the Atlantic Innovation conference on Tuesday (I attended; great tour). As noted, you should be able to see the plane from the large viewing area between A and B/C. Like the other poster, the Boeing rep told me the flight to IAD would depart at 11am on Friday.

Courtesy of the DCAirports Twitter page, you can see the plane up close from the A terminal, near the Museum. https://twitter.com/#!/dcairports/st...698368/photo/1 This is outside of security.
I also attached a shot from the roof of my building :D http://www.brinkleys.org/users/tsl/Files/787.jpg Wish I was gonna be home when it takes off. |
Soooo jealous of anybody hanging out at Gravelly Point as the 787 landed. (Me, I was on my way up to BWI at the time :(
11 a.m. Friday, eh? I just might have to bike over to National for the occasion--and hope the wind is blowing downriver. |
I'm going to find a way to be at Gravelly Point on Friday.

before you buy those dca-lhr tickets, check runway requirements for a loaded 787. it's around 10,000 ft. the solution is easy. mid flight refuel.
My thoughts exactly. Article from DCist, with some pictures: http://dcist.com/2012/05/dreamliner.php#photo-1 |
Just drove by DCA on the GW Parkway and the 787 is now over at the Signature Flight Services area. I guess it will stay there overnight and take off tomorrow...
|
It'll be there tonight for a NAA benefit dinner; there are a bunch of signs up for the event. It's very clearly visible from the Mt Vernon Trail and/or the road to/from Economy Parking. I took this photo through the fence.

Cheers paytonc!
If any of you can get to the Economy Parking lot or the Mt. Vernon trail, the 787 is truly a sight to be seen. As I was a bit disapointed as I was commuting [on foot] home on Tuesday, only to see the tail of the plane, I was ridiculously surprised to see the entire plane, super close to the trail and basically next to all the cars parked in the Economy parking lot. I'll be watching from my place here that overlooks the monuments & the flight path [to the North] and hopefully if the winds are the same as they were this evening, I'll be able to see the 787 leave - and those that are at Gravelly or Long Bridge will be able to see it too! -jeremy |
there should be a decent breeze from the NW. should take off on 1/19 to the north. if the breeze picks up more than expected, will take off on15/33(i don't know which runway number one uses in which direction)
|
Current traffic is landing and taking off on Runway 1 to the north with some express traffic landing on 33.

Flight is now showing up in Flight Aware: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/B...500Z/KDCA/KIAD

It just took off!
|
I watched it from Gravelly Point. It was VERY quiet and only needed about half the runway before rotation.
I could have sworn it said US Airways Express on the side! ;) |

And an estimated 11:48 arrival at IAD. [Please add your own minimum-500-EQM joke.]

They probably sent it out almost empty to keep the runway requirements minimal. It's en route to DFW*, the last stop on the tour.
* home of a certain airline which will paint their carbon planes to look like chromed aluminum, but then again I shouldn't complain since I own an aluminum bicycle painted to look like matte carbon. |

I could have sworn it said US Airways Express on the side! ;) One thing I didn't expect: From the ground, the 787 doesn't look that big. I think it's because the relative size of the engines to the fuselage isn't that far off from a 737--even if the 737's fuselage can't be much wider than a 787 engine. |
When it was at the beginning of the runway it looked big. After takeoff it didn't look that big. I stuck around and got to tell some people they missed seeing it by 5-10 minutes. :p. I'm a lousy photographer with a lousy camera (iPhone 4) but the pic I got was small because it was so high by the time it got to where I was. It did seem to not use much runway.

Yes, exceptionally quiet and fast off the runway--the landing gear were already stowed away by the time it was over Gravelly Point. (If any of you stuck around for another five minutes, you would have witnessed the contrasting example of an AA DC-9 that needed nearly the entire runway to thunder its way into the air.)

And yes, the 787 didn't look massive to me, but definitely bigger than most planes I see at DCA (naturally) and the wings to me didn't look as curved as I'd expected them to. Still, a beautiful sight that I wish could happen all the time here at Reagan, but of course - we get the smaller planes, albeit with the best looks from the airport in all of America of course. -jeremy |
