Slippers in hotel room, used?
 

I have resource from other flyer forum that indicated and confirmed by the hotel house keeping department that many SPG and Marriott properties will wash used slippers at guest room and pack it again for the next guest to use, I've always thought it is new, just wondering if this is a single case or most hotels do so?

I think you might be looking at the higher end hotels with much better slippers that are similar to those offered in Japanese hotels - I don't believe that most hotels offer slippers that are made of materials that are strong enough to stand through a wash.

If the "slippers" are indeed thick rubberized shower shoes (like very substantial versions of beach flip flops), they can probably be sanitized and reused, but anything than looks like it cannot withstand boiling should be assumed to be new and disposable.

I once asked a hotel about this after seeing a confusing sign near the slippers that were provided by the hotel and was reassured that (1) the slippers were new and hadn't been used by a previous guest and (2) they were mine to keep if I so desired.

On what thread is it "indicated and confirmed by the hotel house keeping department that many SPG and Marriott properties will wash used slippers at guest room and pack it again for the next guest to use" and where is that information posted? What/who are the confirmed sources? Are we to believe housekeeping purchases new cellophane wrappers in which to repack these or are they fishing the old cellophane out of trash cans to reuse? This seems unreal, almost as if someone is trying to spread a vicious rumor. Proof, please?

ADDED: This thread is over five years old. It mentions a single SPG hotel where some people assumed the slippers were reusued because they were fancier than the norm, but even at that property, those who took the slippers were not charged. There is also nothing about the slippers being repacked to make them look new. That is a single property, not "many" as is alleged in the first post here.

by now you should know that 5 year old cross threads and 7 year old blogs are all the evidence some posters need to demonstrate the status quo ante of their position ;)

While you know I tend to agree, I'm still willing to see the evidence, if there is any, which is why I ask. I'm not a slippers person, but if this is true, it should be exposed. If there is no basis and the poster is just trying to stir the pot, that should also be shown. The allegation has been made, so hopefully the poster will either show us the basis or we will know it's baseless. As has been mentioned on other threads and news reports, glasses were shown to be cleaned with Lemon Pledge and cumforters, carpet, sheets and furniture failed the black light test, so changes were made, but, of course, in both those cases there was evidence. My search could only find that old FT thread and one older non-FT thread, but maybe there is something else out there.

ADDED: FT was searched for the terms "wash" and "slippers" returning the following results. The first page goes back through May 2015 and has no mention of washing slippers, nor does the single Marriott thread, over two years old, mention this. It's about the size of Thann bottles. There are no SPG threads on the first page. Bing and Google searches for "hotel" and "wash" and "slippers" returned nothing but sales sites, instructions on how to wash slippers at home and the single FT thread posted earlier. Again, hopefully the poster will show us the basis for this claim because it is gross and nobody could be vicious enough to make this up.

@Starwood Lurker, is there any truth to the statement quoted above, made at the top of this thread? While I cannot believe such a thing, as the allegation has been made it would be nice for some official confirmation that it is bogus. Thank you in advance.

And sorry to ask you to look over here, but the post is about both brands and there is no Marriott equivalent to you.

You can politely asking someone for resource, but making any conclusion that someone is spreading rumors for no reasons to do so, or this is base on something 5 years ago, it's just childish for someone as your age. Sorry to see that!


THIS happened in one of Renaissance Shanghai last month, guest found there is problem with slipper in guest room, hotel responded that slippers in the hotel is not disposable but cleaned and reused. I haven't been to mainland china for nearly 10 years, so not sure if this is single case in certain area/country or not.

Which was not done. The original post had a conclusion, but no factual support. The factual support has now been provided, thank you. As was pointed out, this appears to be a one-off, not a many circumstance. I've asked the SPG corporate representative for additional information, but unlike what is stated in the original post this isn't even an SPG issue.

What conclusion was made? "While you know I tend to agree, I'm still willing to see the evidence, if there is any, which is why I ask...if this is true, it should be exposed." seems to support the original post if it can be shown true. Thank you for providing your basis. Each person can now decide for him/herself whether the statement is supported by facts.

Yes, for sure. There are PLENTY of threads been posted and discussion at the biggest flyer forum in Asia that a lot different marriott spg as well as IC in china house keeping team used slipper as reused and cleaned in room for next guest to use. While each case is different situation, some hotel admitted they re used it, some didn't and claimed that is was accident, while the flyers have been questioned about this.

However, we have already had this come up in the Starwood forum before and what is being suggested does not follow policy as far as Starwood's legacy brands/hotels are concerned.
