So the program usually happens in February. Is that to buy back the status for that year or the following year? Assuming they keep the buyback program running.

I imagine it would be for the year starting 3/1/xx, when all the elite levels renew.

So if I was considering the Ritz Carlton card to go gold, when would be the best time to apply and have the status for a year before buying it back the following February? (Assuming they keep the buyback program. )

If you keep the Ritz card, aren't you Gold as long as you have it?

Also, keep in mind if you buy back status, those points are deducted from lifetime points.

Cheers.

IDK for sure, I would confirm with Chase/ Marriott before applying or look in the fine print. This late in the year I would like to think it would be extended to 2/28/17 if you got it now but that is just a guess.

Just make sure you will actually use the Gold benefits before plunking down the $$, most lounges have declined badly in the last few years that bottled water is the biggest benefit for me. If you don't mind what you eat, then it might be beneficial...

Honestly, i'm happy with oatmeal and yogurt for breakfast, and this saves me money each morning. The water is also good. The free internet helps too.

Still the breakfast and water though. May only keep the card for about a year and use points to buy it back after that. It takes 60,000?

Cheers.

The OP may be part of the club (I'm a member as well) of people who rarely book through Marriott.com simply because we aren't allowed to for most stays.

Quote: Usually, you drop to Gold, and are offered a chance to buy back Platinum for (e.g.) 25K points. Be careful: those points are sometimes deducted from your Lifetime Points, but they shouldn't be and you can get them back.

It says you're gold for the first account year, but then you have to spend $10,000 each account year to keep it.

Ah, didn't realize that. Good to know. (I don't have the Ritz card so didn't know the T&Cs).

Cheers.
