Is it possible to move a nonrefundable prepayment to another hotel?
I was planning a multi-city stay in Europe (London, Berlin and Barcelona). Due to some cancellations, I am dropping the Barcelona leg of the strip. I made a reservation at a Renaissance hotel in Barcelona that was "non-refundable if cancelled after 1 business day;" that deadline is passed.
Is it possible for me to convert the payment I made on the Renaissance Hotel into a deposit on a Marriott hotel I am using in London (Edition)? I have no Marriott status and have not made any prepayments on the London hotel as of yet |
Highly doubtful unless they are owned by the same people (even more doubtful being in separate countries) but it can't hurt to give a reason and ask...

Call the property during the business day (in Europe) and speak directly with a manager. You will likely have more luck obtaining a refund, especially if the property is busy, than having the funds transfered to some other owner in some other country. You can then go book what you want elsewhere.
There is zero basis for this request, so just be polite and ask for help. If the answer is "no" it's no. |
The other option if they refuse a refund is to ask to about moving the booking to a later date at the same property. May be better to not let on that you will definitely be a "no-show". There are also some services which allow you to resell your booking, like roomer. I have no experience doing this though.

+1 - These non-refundables are rarely a good deal in the end. People either get locked in to travel they didn't want or can't have the flexibility they want.

I've often boomed non-refundable rooms on short notice when the trip is a definite. It can offer a nice 10% savings.

I've often used them; sometimes (e.g. Hilton) the terms are quite good, other times the expected savings are worth it. If I save 20% each time, and have to abandon 5% of the reservations, I'm still ahead.
