USIrritated, you're missing one important thing.

If someone isn't going to get the # of nights needed for the # of nights/points promo, they won't get any megabonus points at all! Nada, buptkus.

So in that case, certs are more valuable than points. Certs now have a 1-year expiration date. And while there are some not so great shake places to redeem, there are a # of excellent places to redeem them & even at not so great places, if there's a special event & the rates go sky high that's a good use of them.

Folks, this is not an either or thing. For some points will be better. For others certs will be better. And it varies each time a promo happens, as people's travel patterns can change throughout a year.

Speaking for myself there are times when points were more important & I knew I'd hit the nights needed to get them. For others I knew I wouldn't hit the nights, so the certs became more important.

I'm just glad that, even if inconsistently, Marriott does allow changes vs. just doing a blanket no to everyone.

Cheers.

One thing which would increase Cat 4 certs value is if they let you use them on Cat 5 savers (20K points). Not sure why they don't do this.

OOPs, I meant points: 35,000 points for 20 nights annd 15,000 points for 5 more nights. It's been a while since I had my account changed to points rather than miles earning.

NJUPINTHEAIR Dec 21, 2012 1:56 pm

Hopefully, some hotels that were reclassified to Cat 5 this year due to past heavy use of Mega Certs, will fall back to Cat 4 because of the inability to use such certs during this year.

I get the "a note on this promotion" error, but I am not sure why.

I maxed out on the last megabonus (50K points). I hope that does not make me ineligible.

I guess I will have to call monday.

I got the max last time and was offered the big points one this time, right when the promo apparently opened.

DoctorK Dec 22, 2012 1:26 pm

I just hit six stays to max out the last promotion and earn three certificates. Now I've been offered the 50,000 for 25 nights promotion, which won't work for me at all. I'll stay a maximum of 18 nights (more likely 14 nights) in the promotion period. I'll try to change on Monday to the 3 certificates for 6 stays promo, otherwise I'll likely be staying elsewhere for 1Q 2013.

On that promo, you would still get 35,000 points if you can make 20 nights. Otherwise, you might try to ask for the other smaller (40,000 maximum, with intermediate points, perhaps 25,000, at a lower step) points promo that one person reported here. I think it was mentioned in one of the early posts after the MegaBonus offers appeared, but I don't know how common it is.

Need to take a look what cat 4 hotels are out there I could use certs on...

Oh quick question.. do stays using certs earn elite nights?

BKKLEE Dec 22, 2012 9:43 pm

the # of Cat 4's will likely change in Feb as catagorys are re-adjusted however, resees made at existing Cat 4s which go up are honored......

no............cert nights do NOT count towards elite nights (like other brands like SPG do)...........

Still haven't received my promo offer. I could speculate why others have their offers I don't - I maxed out the last several times, I'm about to get a short-cut to 2013 Gold status via heavy use Marriott brands Oct - Dec. Would that by why? I really think that "customizing" these offers, in the long run, is a bad idea unless their best customers get better offers as soon as they are posted. I don't get it.

VickiSoCal Dec 22, 2012 11:25 pm

Nobody knows why some people don't get bonus offers in their new promotions automatically, and why some come later that others. It seems to be an IT issue. Marriott employees have stated that it is Marriott's intent that all members get a bonus offer during each Megabonus period. I do not believe that anyone has ever reported calling and being told they aren't getting any MB offer. Sometimes they don't like what they get, but everyone gets something.

I didn't even have to register - it showed up as registered automatically in my Promotions list (35000/50000). I basically lived in Marriotts in 2012 though...

But I won't even come close. I'll most likely have 14. Possibly, but highly unlikely, as many as 18. Three Cat-4 certificates are a lot more valuable to me than 35,000 points anyway, and certainly more valuable than zero points.

No details

Anybody else in my situation?
I see the promo in my promotion central but it shows no details.

However, I can register. (and I'm registered)
I'm wondering now for what I've registered.

That would seem to be a new twist. You'll probably have to call MR to get the answer to "for what?"

SkiAdcock Dec 23, 2012 9:41 am

I'm Lifetime Plat & last couple of years it's been the norm for the MegaBonus not to show up in my Promotion Central, which then requires a call to MRCS to find out if I even have one. I do & they tell me what it is, but it's irritating that I have to call each time.

Cheers.

+1 (except I've been Plat for years, and hopefully about to become LT Plat)

USI

it might make informed travelers like you and me happier. It may not however the goal of the program which is to drive sales over Marriott's client base. Most don't know there are multiple options and try to achieve the goal that Marriott has put out for them.

The goal of all of these promos is incremental sales. If last year you made the 15+5 promo, a nice push goal (from Marriott's perspective) is 25 over the same period.

Choose any ONE option from below. Once you have made your choice below, and have completed your registration for Mega bonus, changes will not be possible. Please enjoy Spring 2013 Mega bonus, and good luck!

1 - Stay two nights, receive one category 1-4 certificate, receive up to three certificates.

2 - Stay two nights (or three nights), receive one category 1-5 certificate, receive up to two certificates.

3 - Stay 20 nights, receive 25,000 points, stay 5 additional nights, receive 15,000 additional points, for 40,000 points total.

4 - Stay 25 nights, receive 35,000 points, stay 5 additional nights, receive 15,000 additional points, for 50,000 points total.

Wouldn't offering Mega bonus in this way make a lot more people happy, and hold the "I want to switch" calls to MR to a minimum?

I really prefer the stay 2 get 1 promo--It works best for me. I told her that I am platinum because I am a meeting planner and not because I stay 20 nights a quarter. She could see that reflected in my points. She told me she wouldn't switch me right now, but to call back a few weeks before the promo ended and if I didn't earn what I had been enrolled in, then she would switch me over. I get that when they switch, they have to manually adjust it, but really--can we just pick from the beginning what will work best for our travel patterns! The reward is suppose to be obtainable, and I do stay a few more nights to get the free night most of the time. So they are getting more of my business.

+1... they told me to call back after Feb 1st and I completed the 6 stays for the certificates to be posted manually

SkyTeam777 Dec 24, 2012 9:46 am

I called and at first they didnt want to switch it, but then she talked with a supervisor and said she would make notations in the account that at the end of the promotion they would offer the free nights instead of the points. But, they could only put a note in the account instead of switching it right away. Hope they will honor it down the road! But, I do appreciate the switch.

nachosdelux Dec 24, 2012 9:59 am

I called the 1-888-Marriott number that Marriott Concierge posted in this thread, and I got a recording that said the promotion was not open for enrollment until Jan 3rd.

That is some outstanding IT work!

Update: called MR and was added to the 20nts/35K and 25nts/50K promo

cfischer Dec 24, 2012 10:04 am

got the: 35,000 points after 20 paid nights + 15,000 points after 25 paid nights—up to 50,000 bonus points offer. Will probably call to have them switch me to another one. Won't be staying 20+ nights during that timeframe.

This sounds exactly what i did back in August. Below is a copy/paste from a post i made on page 6. Maybe this will happen to you as well...

So this most recent megabonus, I called this past August and they switched it to the 2 cat 1-5 certificates...i was originally signed up for the 40k pt bonus after 20 stays.

They said it wouldn't change on my online profile, but they would track it on their end.

I called back November to check on the status, and they said the agent, back in August, told me incorrect information. Their rewards department cannot add 1-5 certificates onto my account...they can however add pts of course. This is what I was told over the phone....

So therefore he went to speak to a supervisor, and instead agreed to give me 50k points after my 4th stay...this was his nice gesture for the mistake the agent made in August (which is equivalent to 2 cat 1-5 certificates)

I just received the 50k points...not too bad Some may doubt what I am saying, so if you want further proof, then PM me and ill send you a screenshot of the "goodwill adjustment" on my account

USirritated Dec 24, 2012 1:08 pm

All of this mishegoss just adds to my strong feeling (from experience) that it all just comes down to either who you get on the phone, or how good we are, after the fact, at explaining that some terrible agent promised something which that agent should not have promised, and that whichever manager is involved now, must offer some sort of compensation for what the terrible agent should not have promised in the first place.

With regard to my situation, I simply called to check on the status of the promotion, and the new agent caught the error...explained exactly what that error was...he was very apologetic for the mistake that the previous agent had made.

-He insisted on speaking to his supervisor and made sure that once he returned to the phone, he would have a resolution that would be beneficial to my favor.

-he gave me his extension to follow up with him in the future etc etc It was quite a nice experience, and the best ive had dealing with the agents.

I literally didn't make a big deal about the situation at all, and they went out of their way without me asking or "insisting" on any type of compensation.

So i guess my advice is to expect nothing/act nonchalant calm and cool, therefore you will stand out in a positive light amongst some rewards members who may get overly angry on the phone lol :D
