Downgrade from Platinum...always Gold ?

Right now I am Gold until january 2012.
If I make Platinum this year, I suppose it will be valid status until january 2012 also.
My question is : If I am platinum until january 2012, am I sure to be Gold until january 2013, whatever number of nights I will stay at Marriott properties in 2011 ? Or could I be directly downgraded from Platinum to Silver ?

I assume you've made gold by staying 50 nights so far in 2010. On that basis if you do another 25 nights this year you will attain Plat, though only till the same end date as your gold, Feb 2012.

Marriott has an unwritten policy that it doesnt undertake double downgrades, so PLT Prems are downgraded to PLT's, PLT's to Gold, Gold to silver, no matter how few nights acheived during the year immediately preceding the downgrade. Hence in your case if you acheived PLT this year but stayed less than 50 nights (or indeed not at all) in 2011, you'd only be busted down to Gold for period ending Feb 2013.

It is worth remembering this is an unwritten rule and such understandings can go south pretty rapidly.

Who remembers the rolling calendar?

An interesting add on is that depending on a number of issues, Marriott has been known to keep a person at their current level even if they didn't meet the normal requirements. There are some who post here that have stated that they came short of the 75 nights needed, but Marrriott kept them at Plat level.

So basically you can say you would be at least Gold the next year and might even keep Plat. :)

I'm a *wood Plat and was just status Matched by Marriott, renewable conditional upon 18 nights til aug 31st. I plan to be renewed, but I'm pretty new to marriott and got a couple of questions.

1. Brightlybob mentioned Plat prem and Plats? Is there a higher level than Plat? Plat Prem?

2. If I were to achieve & renewed PLT til Feb 2012, and in 2011 I have less than 25 nights, would I MOST LIKELY be downgraded to Gold? Since my previous status is actually regular member 0 nights.

3. Finally, do multi rooms count towards nights stay? Say I were to book 3 rooms for 2 nights, would that count as 6 paid?

Thanks in Advance

Platinum Premier is a revenue (probably?) based level above platinum. Nobody knows the exact criteria, but it appears to involve nights over multiple years and possibly total revenue. It's acknowledged by Marriott as the top 3% of all platinums, but they don't say what criteria that 3% is based on. There are not really any additional published benefits (different phone number?), though some people feel like they get suite upgrades more often.

Probably Gold. They have a history of the soft landings (though not an official policy).

Officially, no. However, you'll find that many people report consistently earning six nights in that situation at the limited service properties (Fairfield, Courtyard, etc.). Expect to only earn two nights at a full service property in that situation.

:) Thanks a bunch tvetter! 1 final question: Platinum Premier is it a real membership level with a different card, or is it more of an internal differentiation of PLT.

It is a different level and I do believe the card says "Premier" on it. And you will get a completely different MR# to call for reservations and rewards issues.

I used to know one of them -- he was checked in Mariott properties more than 365 days/year. He would work on site for several months, then move to another site and spend several months there. He would work 4 or 5 day weeks on location and leave himself checked in at the remote RI when he flew home for the weekends. Several times a year, he would meet his spouse at a vacation spot and spend that particular weekend there, checked into another Marriott property (on points, obviously) while he was still checked into the RI that he was staying at.

His Plat Premier lifestyle was not something I wish to emulate!

Soft Landings for Status Downgrades?

I have been a Platinum for the past year and a half. No way to possibly re-qualify for Platinum status this year (45 nights so far). What happens if I stop short of 50 nights for this year? Will I be demoted to a Silver or is there a soft landing to Gold? Because my best chance to be a Platinum again is to roll over 35+ nights into next year!

FWIW, many of my stays have been at upper level properties... not sure if this matters.

BKKLEE Nov 26, 2012 2:48 pm

from previous posts read (use search function) others have reported that MRs soft landing policy is to provide you gold status from plat if you don't requal for plat................but with that said, since it would take 50-nights and you only have 45, you will not get the 35 rollover nights.............

Yes, MR does do soft landings, so expect to be Gold for next year. And only those nights over your CURRENT STATUS would roll over, so nothing for next year (unless you do over 75 as Plat this year). However, MR has also been known to extend your current status if they see a potential of getting more business.

do a meeting

and you will be at gold...or I believe you can buy back plat for 40K points or so.

... and if he does, he is still Gold which he will be if he does nothing. And no rollover nights unless he goes over 75 nights this year. So why spend the money on a meeting?

RobertS975 Nov 27, 2012 12:31 pm

I was also mistaken about the rollover policy... it was my belief that those nights over any threshold level would roll over, not just above your current level.
