Which Munich Hotel is better?
 

I am going to be in Munich for a few days in October and am wondering which is better the Marriott or the Renaissance? If the difference is slight, I would like to stay at the Ren since I can use my W14s and not have to burn points. I understand neither hotel is right in the center of things but is either one close to a subway or train into the city? Thanks,

I go with Marriott rewards that the Munich Marriott Hotel (Category 5) outperforms the Munich Renaissance Hotel (Category 4). Economical thinking I go with you to choose the Renaissance.

The location on the edge of Schwabing and Englischer Garten and far away from downtown is not great. The next underground station [U6 Nordfriedhof (stop for LHs airport bus) or U6 Dietlindenstraße] is a 10 minutes walk away. From U6 Dietlindenstraße you are one stop away from Münchner Freiheit and five stops from Marienplatz.

BTW.: The Oktoberfest ends at the first weekend in October (October 6th 2002), so if you would like to use your W14 voucher do not come this weekend!

Both are right next door to each other and you have to use the same subway stop (see previous post). Personally I have only experience with the Marriott and that is already not a very great one. Therefore spending more money on it seems to be not a good value.

Have stayed many times at the Marriott and always been pleased with the hotel, service, and location. The subway (U-bahn) stop is quite close (<5 minute walk); 10 minutes on the train and you're downtown.

Can't offer a direct comparison as I've never stayed at the Ren, but both hotels are fairly near to one another. Since you can use the W14 at the Ren, I'll concur with the advice of the previous posts. Gute Reise!

I have never not been upgraded at the rennaisance hotel when I used to be a marriott customer

The rennaisance is a few feet (257)closer to the U bahn, (nord Freidhof)(North Cemetary)

My experiences with the Renaissance have been nothing but wonderful!

I've stayed there about 5 or 6 times (I love Munich!). As a Marriott Rewards Platinum, I've always been upgraded to the Executive Suite (62 square meters, fabulous accommodations) even when on a W14 certificate, and received complimentary breakfast even when the rate didn't include breakfast. The staff is very helpful and accommodating as well.

Only complaints: No clock visible from the bed, and seldom get a Platinum amenity. Hey, I can live with that.

Thanks Counsellor. As a MR PLAT, I booked my W14 stay in late October and will hope for the best. I appreciate all the help from everyone.

I stayed in a suite at the Renaissance late last October as well, as it was only €15 more than a regular room. Given its non-central location, the hotel is very empty on weekends, and I would assume an upgrade to a suite would be easy to come by for a Plat.

My suite was indeed large, with a slightly odd layout: sitting area, round dinner table with nearby sink, separate bedroom but without door, walk-in closet with makeup table, very long bathroom with entrance at each end. My room had a full complement of women's magazines although I am a man...
Access to the top floor is confusing (must change elevators) and the hallways very long.

On Saturday morning there is a lively street market right next to the hotel. Staff was courteous throughout.

If you were to be coming from the airport to the Marriott Munich with a big suitcase and 2 smaller bags, how would you go? S-Bahn to some station in town, and then take a taxi? If so, which station?

You can go with LH shuttle bus to the North of Munich ("München-Schwabing, Nordfriedhof"). The bus is described by the following links:

If you have a look at the map of the Marriott, the "Nordfriedhof" (underground station U6) is on the connection point Ungererstrasse/Isarring. For those with small or without luggage: walk! The Marriott is not far away. For those with more luggage: the bus driver can call a taxi to pick you up at "Nordfriedhof".

The same transfer can also be used to go to the Renaissance.

I have a reservation at the Renaissance for my arrival on Friday, any other details I should know. I was planning on taking the Shuttle Bus into the city and either a taxi or underground from there?

As a platinum I sounds like there is a good chance for an upgrade... what about is the size of the rooms etc?

TxLobo.......I stay at either the Munich Marriott or the Renaissance frequently. As the posts above say, they are both within a block of each other. Take The Lufthansa Shuttle from the airport to downtown but get off at the first stop....München Nord - Schwabing....and you only have a short 2 block walk to the Renaissance.
I have never been upgraded at either hotel and I am a Marriott Platinum. Sounds, however, like others have had better luck. I do prefer the Marriott to the Renaissance but the two are both nice hotels.

That's really strange because they have a lot of Junior suites. The Ren really rocks. Good luck the next time you stay there. (They even comp breakfast during the weekend for Platinums. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ).

I spent two nights at the Munich Ren in late December on free Cat 4 weekend certs. As a Platinum, they upgraded me to a large two-room suite on the fourth floor and provided comlimentary breakfast buffet.

It is a nice hotel in a business area, although certainly nothing special. However, the breakfast buffet was outstanding! There was a carpark under the hotel (connected via the lift) but I don't recall the cost.

The U-bahn station is only a few hundred meters from the hotel. Its about a 10 minute ride to Marienplatz and the downtown area. Taxis back from downtown to the hotel run about 10-15 euros.
