Yes, some do SPG hotel hopping to get Plat "Lite" in 25 stays and less than 50 nights. Hilton also bestows status based upon stays or nights. Not sure how many others do.

This is just like airlines...its either miles or the number of one way trips you have done

Actually, might be a bit short sighted. You would loose the benefits of the higher status until you re-earn them, amoung them being the higher bonus points. But if title is all that matters, yes. :D

But if you do get the rollover nights, wouldn't you only be silver for 11 nights before regaining Gold? Although I guess if you're doing 49 nights/year that's still 2.5 months.

Yes, 11 earned nights will get you Gold, and 36 will get you Platinum. And remember once you hit Gold or Plat, you must exceed 50 or 75 earned nights to get any rollovers. So nights 12 - 50 do nothing to promote your status (they do count for lifetime and you do get the points).

Also, Meeting Events nights will also count, so in each event you can earn 10 additional nights! So in one week, you can earn an additional 50 nights (you might have to book five different events/day, but ...).
