The most important thing in traveling is that you need to join all the programs there is in order to get the most perks. I strongly believe that when we are on the road away from our loved ones, we need as many perks as we can get so that way we will be all hooked on getting points/miles and we won't be missing our loved ones as much as we should http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

After reading all this thread, I wanted to see if I could get "comp'ed" to an elite status. I did, and got silver over the phone. It is already posted on my rewards profile, one day later. I was asked if I could document the number of nights a year I travel, and when I agreed to do this, they later on in the call said never mind.

I have to do a mini "challenge", which is x number of nights by December 31.

Not bad. Now the big question: will silver status be enough to get me on the concierge level?

Technically only Golds & Platinums get access, unless you book a room on that floor. I'm a Silver and have been given access to the floor (not a room on the floor) a few times by benevolent desk clerks.

It all depends on who you get. I am 8 nights from Gold, and just checked into the Denver Marriott Tech Center. I am booked for 17 nights, so I asked if I could be given access since technically I will turn Gold during the stay. The girl refused saying "You have to be Gold when you check in".

Go ahead and join. Do not expect a thing other than the points. As a Platinum Level Member for teh past two years and gold before that, I am finished trying to stay in Marriotts. If it works out, okay, no more extra effort. They have not shown me a bit of extra effort.

Yesterday morning, I called the SF Marriott, asked them to please be sure my Plat Level number was posted. Yes, sir, sure, no problem, no prob with an upgrade to conc level.

I checked in, I might as well have been a bag lady. No upgrade, no welcome gift. A crappy room for $255.00 (before energy surcharge, 20% convention tax, and $20.00 breakfast.

I am seriously considering moving down the street.

But yes, join. Expect nothing and you will always be surprised.

Update....

1. Tiny Room
2. No Coffee Maker (they did bring one on request, with styrofoam cups)
3. Maid did not service coffee maker (took the mugs I had room service bring)
4. $255.00 per night AND 2.50 energy charge.... COME ON

2nd update

It has now been two weeks, points not posted on the site yet.

So now I get to call a toll number, fax a copy of the receipt, submit blood and urine samples, and pray that they get it right.....

Interesting. When I stayed at a Sheraton, they originally credited half the points (ie. 750) for my stay, compared to the usual Qantas amount. When I contacted them and questioned it, they told me it was a processing error and it become the usual 1500. (not bad for a one-night stay)

And, they have kept me at Gold level again, even though they don't know I've stayed at any of their hotels in the last year.
