Quality of towel is another point entirely, with which I would concur.

I use one to wrap my hair so that the water doesn't drip down my back while I'm trying to dry off with the other one. If the bathroom is a little larger, I may use another one as an extra bathmat, since those are usually quite small. I never have them replaced during my stays, as I find that quite wasteful. I certainly reuse my towels at home.

I agree that the quality is noticeably worse, especially in most Marriotts and Renaissances.

I rarely pay attention to the qty of towels.

Interesting.

I never use more than one, but would like to use a good quality one. If I´m only for a single night, I might even reuse the one my wife has used. I simply detest wasting resources like fresh water to wash towels that have been used only once. Many, many times I´ve tried to hang the towels on the rack and still they´ve given me new ones every day. What a waste, IMO.

As we can see, customers have very different preferences.

Try drying long hair and your face with one towel, and then using the same towel to dry your body, while your long hair that's still wet, but no longer sopping drips down your back, or is now sopping again because it's absorbed moisture from your back before you could dry it.

Hate to break it to you, but at hotels in the US, all the towels are replaced when a guest departs, even if the guest was only staying one night. This for sanitary reasons, as there is simply no way for the housekeeping staff to ensure a towel was not used and refolded/rehung by the guest. Think how nasty it would be to get out of the shower grab a towel, start drying off, and find it covered in dirt (or something worse) from a prior guest. (Yuck!) This may also explain why you only find two of each type of towel when you arrive.

BTW, I too have noticed the quality of the towels has gone downhill the last couple of years, and not just at Marriott/Rens.

Regards,

RIP...

I do not reuse towels at home, so I don't expect to reuse them at hotels. Before anyone flames me for wasting water, I have also lowered the water flow into my home, so I waste less water washing dishes, taking showers, etc. A frequent topic on my neighborhood email list is how expensive water is here in Atlanta. (For those not from here, you probably have no idea. Water/Sewage is our most expensive utility.) While most of my neighbors average $300/mo for water, and many have had bills in the four digits, mine rarely goes over $25, with the occasional $35 month.

My one indulgence is having clean towels after every shower. Budgeting my water usage to be both responsible and inclusionary of this indulgence doesn't make me wasteful.

As long as we're talking about towels, the stickers on everything at the Montreal Marriott Chateau Champlain really, really grosses me out, to the point that I can't stay there ever again.

Also, I sometimes end up in a room with two other adults, so we definitely need at least one big towel each. I have fairly long hair, but I usually make do with one towel, as the entire summer, my hair goes up into a ponytail after I wash it.

Checked in today at a FS Marriott and I had extra towels and pillows. Yeah!

Thanks for that mental image. Now what was the subject again??

I feel a bit the voyeur reading about FTer naked bathroom rituals. I've never really paid much attention to this issue. I request extra towels when traveling with family. Otherwise I go with what's provided. Seems most FS provide acceptable towels. Anything better is an unexpected bonus.
