In my experience, which is many stays per year, this property is a winner. When I think of the mission that Starwood set for the W brand, this hotel comes to mind. My experience is one of CONSISTENCY. Service is always good, adherence to SPG guidelines for elites has been 100%, and you leave the hotel with a feeling that you want to return.
The one thing I wish the hotel had is a restaurant other than Spice Market. SM is great, but a more general choice, outside of room service, would be great. |

Good stay so far. Pre blocked into Fantastic Suite 2-3 days ago for a 1 night stay. No line at check in (bellman/valets too busy talking to grab my bag), Plat recognition with points/offer for late check out.
High floor fantastic suite is nice, although you definitely need to share the room with someone you're comfortable with as the shower walls are see-through from the bedroom. (Mental note: good getaway with the wife!) Had a good later dinner at TAP down the street (NW corner of Peachtree/14th). Nice draft beer selection, ok bottles, interesting sandwiches with a few entrees. Similar to last visit, received a single bottle of Fuji and 2 chocolate truffle-pops in room. Again, so much better than the old Sheraton that used to be here that I can't believe I'm in the same building. View looking north to Buckhead, with lots of green between here and there (High Museum is visible as well). |
Stayed here for two nights last weekend. Upgraded as a Plat from Wonderful Room to Fantastic Suite. As others have said the glass shower wall open to the bedroom takes some getting used to, but overall we felt the design and decor of the suite was quite well done. Of all the Ws we have stayed at we feel this one conveys the concept and style the chain aspires to most successfully. Service, from front desk to valet parking to housekeeping, is consistently good as well, something that is not true chainwide. The W Midtown has now become my hotel of choice in the Capitol of the South.
While we did not eat at Spice Market, I feel compelled to comment on Atlanta's restaurant scene, which has been the subject of much debate here. I eat at a lot of very good restaurants around the world at every price point. Atlanta has become quite competitive at most every level (excluding hyper gourmet places like Alinea that are few and far between in the US). Particular restaurants of note include TWO Urban Licks, Canoe(stunning location on the river), Bacchanalia, Bones and Abattoir. |
I stay here regularly and there has been a change recently in their treatment of Platinums. I used to get upgraded regularly; on my last 2 stays, both in the last month, I was not upgraded from a Wonderful room even though all categories showed available on spg.com after check in. I asked, and was told again that "an upgrade was not available". I didn't both fighting it, but if I cared more would have gotten Platinum Concierge involved.
The property is still decent, but I would not choose it on the basis of their treatment of Platinums (or perhaps even avoid it on that basis). |

Weird innit. I've stayed here twice the last couple of months and on both times been upgraded to a Fantastic Suite from a Wonderful room. No hassle. Sort of highlights the inconsistencies of the programme at times.
I was thinking the same thing. I've always been upgraded at this property. it's my favorite ATL property. |

So was I, until this month. Have you stayed in the last month or so? Would be interesting to see if there was some kind of management change, or maybe I just got unlucky, but it's now happened twice in a row in a period of a few weeks.

Thanks to William I have the explanation. Apparently this property pre-blocks people into unsold rooms, then bumps them out if they get sold. So the rooms I saw as available had already been allocated as upgrades for other Platinums who had not yet checked in. He also pointed out that this was not a "best practice" for the hotel, because it is not in conformance with the T&C of program ("best available room at check-in"), but apparently it is a common one.

Quick one night stay here as part of a Atlanta trip. Told there was no suite upgrade available so I took the Wonderful room they gave me. When I got to the room there was still a housekeeper working in the room so back I went to the front desk. In the elevator I checked my iPhone app and it showed suites available so I addressed this with the agent. I didn't need the room right away and told the agent I would leave my bags there and come back after 6pm so there was no rush. She continued to tell me there was no suites available until my discussion with the desk agent was overheard by a young lady who pulled me aside and said she would see what she could do. Evidently she was the new Guest Relations or Front Desk Manager (only on the job for a week or so according to her). She came back and told me that she had found me a suite but it would not be available until later....fine since I had told them I would be more than willing to leave my bags there and check into the room later. In my discussions with her, I referenced the fact that comments on an online forum I was a member of had referenced recent issues at the hotel. She said they were aware of the issues and that she would be addressing them now that she was in the position.
Now to the good! The Fabulous Suites was incredible...probably one of the nicest suites I have had at a W Hotel. Great layout with a really nice bathroom. Only small issue is the overhead rain showerhead IMHO. Just didn't do it for me and I had issues getting the temperature right. Other than that a great suite. Hopefully the new manager can address some of the issues reported here recently. |
Bump. Any recent updates? I'm booked for 3 nights in a standard Wonderful room. As a Plat, what's the chances of upgrade into a suite?
