Thank you!

So just to clarify, if I reach Silver and don’t bother getting Gold, it will be valid through to February 2026?

When I get Silver, will the nights reset to zero and start from zero and earn 25 nights or will I get Gold after getting the additional 15 nights to get Gold?

Your Silver will be valid through Feb 2026.

You only need 15 more points after hitting Silver to reach Gold. The nights do not reset.

If you reach Gold at any point during the year, it will be good until February 2026. You have until December 31st to get the additional 15 nights.

J343 If you are semi-serious about pivoting towards Bonvoy then you could consider getting the UK Bonvoy Amex card that costs a £95 annual fee but gives you 15 Elite Night Credits (like you've stayed an additional 15 nights in hotels) which will take you to Gold Elite once you've got your 10 nights for Silver. There's a bunch of other card benefits too when you reach spending thresholds.

Thereafter, with the not-guaranteed-but-seemingly-annual double night promo you would need to plan (50-15 = 35/2 =) 18 nights a year in hotels during the promo period to attain Platinum.

Link to UK Bonvoy Amex

Important safety points: (1) I personally find Amex to be a frustrating waste of plastic in Europe and Asia as it's not accepted at anything like as many outlets as Visa and MasterCard but YMMV and this is not the place to ignite a row with Americans for whom it's a normal charge/credit card; and (2) as has already been briefly mentioned Bonvoy Silver and Gold membership will genuinely feel like nothing so manage your expectations of attaining these levels (and I mean manage them to zero expectations) because the real benefits like free booze and food in lounges, breakfasts, 4pm checkouts, notable room upgrades, being thanked at check-in for being an elite, only kick in at Platinum level.

Thanks very much!

I’d still debating whether to get it or not. I already have the AMEX Gold which frankly my use has stagnated!

I posted in another forum that my partner is an IHG One elite member and the late check outs are always a nice touch and it’s always guaranteed.

Also I guess it’s because I’ve been staying in hotels more than usual since the last quarter of last year mainly due to work so I thought I’d give it a go. I was an SPG elite before Marriott acquired them and did enjoy the few perks and benefits here and there (mainly in the Middle East). Since then, I never bothered until very recently.

I will have more thinking but thanks for sharing! :)

UK is the exception here as Amex is accepted more or less everywhere, just like in the US; in most of mainland Europe my experience is that Amex cards are pretty much useless outside of hotels and airports.

Laughably (charmingly so) I have found myself "thanked" on checkin multiple times this year and last at bog-standard Courtyard/Fairfield properties in the USA for being a Silver Elite. It's all I can do to not laugh since, for real, I don't even get a bottle of water at these places. Suppose the "thanks" is more sustainable...

Platinum also gives you club lounge access at participating brands (no Ritz Carlton). I did get more upgrades with Platinum Elite vs Gold.

I second that. We just scored a diplomatic suite upgrade at the Puerto Vallarta Marriott for a room that was an ocean view on points. Nice surprise as a relatively new Platinum Elite. Granted it was just a single night stay still very very nice. Now I will apply some suite upgrades for future stays.
