Different rates online and in app?
I usually book using the Marriott website, but was having trouble getting something to go through, so I tried the app. The app showed a rate at least $30 higher than the rate I had seen (and was eventually able to book) online. I was looking at a AAA “hot deal” rate online, but the app did not show that, and instead showed simply a higher “AAA” rate. Is this unusual, or should I start to routinely check both places to find the better rate?

Yes this is not unusual. I select my hotels and book in the app because their website is such a sh!+show but tend to check again on the website. There's a decent probability (10%?) of the website being cheaper, usually on special rates. Rarely do I see it more expensive.

Agree, something is "captive." I book on my laptop without signing in, then when i see lower rate details for what i want, I sign in for the reservation.
IMO, it's the goofy upcharge for Amex card rates, as it's cued into my sign in rates. probably need to drop Amex card guarantee.

Indeed, it seems that was set to include taxes and fees, and when I unchecked it this morning I did get the same rate. Thanks for alerting me to that - I hadn’t noticed it was there.
It is a bit strange, though, that this morning the app is showing both the AAA “hot deal” rate and the regular AAA rate. Last night the app showed only one AAA rate, and didn’t flag it as a “hot deal.”

I tried to re-create this. I did a dummy points booking for Madrid on Aug 20-21. The prices are all identical EXCEPT the website offers Points Saver rates on some properties and my app (Apple) does not. So good to know that you should always check the website before making a reservation.
