Changing reservation

Just want to pass on a small point. I had booked a reservation using a sizeable amount of points a couple of months ago. Yesterday I decided to check what the current rates were for the hotel. Found that the number of points required had dropped. Based on what I've read on flyertalk, I did not call Marriott. Instead I cancelled the original reservation and placed a new one. Worked perfectly.

You don't need to cancel and rebook. There's a better, safer way:
  1. Log in to Marriott.com on a web browser.
  2. Click "My Trips" from the options at the top.
  3. Click "Expand" for the reservation you wish to check/change.
  4. Click "VIEW/MODIFY" for the reservation you wish to check/change.
  5. Note how many points your current reservation uses.
  6. Click "EDIT ROOM"
  7. See how many points the same room type would now require.
  8. If the points are lower, click "UPDATE" (adjacent to the new points) and follow the subsequent instructions to complete the update. The difference in points will be credited back to your account almost instantly.
  9. If the points are a same or higher, click "RETURN TO ORIGINAL RESERVATION."
Your original reservation remains "safe" unless you follow through with the update. This is better than canceling first. If you cancel first, there's always the chance that you won't be able to make the new reservation and you will have lost your original reservation.

Thanks for this advice - I just did a quick spot check of a flexible booking I have next month and found the same room is now 43 cheaper!

Some reservations are cancelable or changeable up to the day before, others are 2 days. Some places, in season (like a ski place in winter) can be 2 weeks. Check your confirmation or if you are just booking, it will tell you the cancel and change rules before you have to pay

Your confirmation email for a flexible reservation includes text similar to this: "You may cancel your reservation for no charge before 11:59 PM local hotel time on Wednesday, December 23, 2023 (3 day before arrival)." The number of days varies. It can be as few as one day. The time can vary, but it's usually 11:59 PM local hotel time.

The cancellation date and time are also the latest that you can change a reservation. When you "EDIT ROOM" online, you're technically cancelling and rebooking, although your reservation number remains the same.
