Hotels asking for tips for housekeeping via QR code

First I’ve seen of this. Hotel housekeeping at the Gwen in Chicago left a card allowing for cashless tipping. Anyone else see this at any Marriott hotel? Seems tacky in my opinion, but I guess that’s Bonvoy these days.

Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort had a similiar card with a handwritten name on the top when I stayed there 2 weeks ago. I always plan ahead and bring cash to tip daily though. God only know what the hotel owners skims from that QR transaction.

"Ew. Dirty money. I'm not picking that up."

Given how many people regularly don't carry cash anymore (including me), that's probably their best option to get a tip. I've had a bellmen tell me he accepts tips through Venmo for the same reason.

(I won't be surprised to hear when strippers start getting a strategically placed QR code tattoo somewhere too...)

Don’t forget it was only a few years ago that Marriott was putting tipping envelopes in rooms

A QR code at the Washington Hilton last week for housekeeping tips would have saved me some time as the front desk had no small bills to exchange for my $20s on checkin and the next morning it took about 20 minutes to find the "cashier" who apparently controlled all the $1s and $5s.

Innovative idea.

A nice way for Marriott hotels to let guests know that they don't pay their US housekeepers a living wage. Began around 2014, ended with the SPG merger.

not Bonvoy. It's just US culture.

Tipping housekeeping seems to be part of US culture, and doing it by QR code seems as good a way as any to me. When I'm in an American hotel for more than one night I will normally tip if I have any local currency as I'm arguably taking a room away from a US citizen who could be leaving $20 or more behind.

That said, calling housekeeping staff "Ambassadors" is yet another candidate for American ........ job title of the year and/ or best misappropriation of the English language by an American company.

Irrespective of language appropriation, it just seems a particularly dumb choice given that the word "Ambassador" is already used by the company and their customers for something else completely different.

And now we know why we can never reach Ambassadors on the phone or via email. They are moonlighting (daylighting?) in Housekeeping
