If you were writing a review on the airport then yes you would mention the local mafia operating there. I have read tons of hotel reports that discuss the neighborhood or other dubious activities that go on in or close to the hotel grounds or even how noisy the surrounding roads are. Some of these things are out of the control of the hotel but are still discussed. I wouldn’t mind learning from a review about the possibility of being attacked by a crocodile at a hotel I intend to visit. The only question I guess is the degree of negativity in the tone of the review. I try to ignore inappropriate puffery when reading reports. |
They say they only learned later that there is one small warning sign, but it's mostly in Spanish and not lit up at night. |
Scary stuff and lesson learned. I guess I'm an idiot, but I would have never expected to encounter crocodiles at the beach just from one sign. I've stayed at the nearby Westin a couple of times recall seeing them all around the nearby golf course, but never thought they would swim around the beach.
It still has to be an exceedingly rare occurrence, but not sure I'll swim in the ocean next time I'm there. |

Crocodile attack did happen at the hotel, and it appears the hotel did what a lot of resorts (especially in Mexico/Caribbean) do when an incident occurs - quietly brush it under the rug, even if it means further detriment for the victim. I don't blame the hotel here for the incident (other than if they did push back on calling an ambulance), but I think they absolutely should update those signs with a big "AVISO / WARNING" or CUIDADO / CAUTION header. I can't believe some of the outrageous comments on this thread.
It's one thing to say the hotel is not at fault. It's quite another to blame the girl for "refusing to take responsibility for her actions." What exactly were her actions? Going on vacation? Walking on a beach at night? How dare she! Good grief, have some sympathy. Can you imagine the trauma of nearly being dragged to your death by a 12-foot crocodile? |

Agreed. They even gave high marks to the service, etc, and said things were excellent, but ended it with a 1 bubble review. Tripadvisor does check their reviews to make sure the final "grade" matches the content of the review and this one does not.
If you were at a hotel and it was great except the the valet went joyriding in your car, totaled it, and management shrugged their shoulders saying they can't do anything, would it be wrong for you to give one star? In this case, everything was great except the guest had to save another guest's life on the beach in front of the property and then learned firsthand the hotel pushed back at getting their own guest proper medical care. |
