Part of my problem is that this seems to be a blanket policy at this hotel - they aren’t modulating it based on demand on the day of departure - it’s just a “you need to get out.” I can’t confirm this, but that’s how it seems.

It’s also annoying that they seemed rather put out by my request to switch in the morning - I asked at 7 AM - “okay, I have to call my manager” - came back down at 7:35 AM - “we will know in 5 minutes” - asked if there was actually a room to move to - “we don’t know” - pushed back and said I wanted to sleep, and they seemed to find a room by calling again. Everything here was very much a “we have to call some mysterious person in the back” - even my initial upgrade. I prefer it when front desk associates are more empowered to make decisions and provide helpful information.

FWIW I had a room issue when I stayed in Jan 2023 for five nights and it seemed that everyone was well intentioned but nothing was sorted for 24 hours until a manager got involved. I’ve seen it before at W hotels where the front desk are chatty and helpful but not empowered or clued up.

I usually find it a positive sign if I have to wait a little extra time for my room cos they are honouring the 4pm checkout of another elite. It tells me a lot about how the property treats elites. It’s really annoying if you’re with your other half or family and have to move rooms part way during your last day at a property - it kind of defeats the point of late checkout, which in my book is to make your last day more flexible and relaxing. Different strokes for different folks though :)

We think alike and I admire your thought process.Ive been at hotels however where the elite member requests early
check in at 10 AM and then goes into an absolute hissy fit when told no earlier than noon check in @ arrival for their room which had been upgraded to a suite
That same couple was demanding complimentary lunch meanly for their family as compensation for their inconvenience
As difficult as I consider myself I feel like a saint by comparison 😂

W decor as expected

Overall, I quite enjoyed my time at the W Melbourne - it was a far cry from the Ritz Melbourne in all the best ways. Here are my pros, cons, and photos:

Pros:
  • Upgraded to a WOW Suite from a Cozy Room the morning of arrival (upgrade had shown a Marvelous Suite the night before arrival) - now, that's an upgrade!
  • The WOW Suite is strongly adherent to the W aesthetic and was very interesting - the mirrored ceiling with lights in the cracks was very unique

I stayed at a similar WOW Suite for 2 nights using expiring NUA.
The pictures are very similar to the other post from 2023, so I'll just outline the difference.

Pros
  • NUA seems to work here. Cleared 5 days ago at 3:00 PM local time.
  • Room is clean upon arrival and daily housekeeping is on the spot.
  • Heaters are really effective at heating up the living room and bedroom, very responsive. (Outside was 12C / 54F)
  • Fridge is full size, and the cabinets contain many metal wine glasses which are enough for a party.
  • Light and curtain controls are easy to operate, although most controls are not integrated to the tablet.
  • In-Room Dining presentation is exquisite with a huge tray and a wireless button to summon the staff.
  • Full buffet breakfast for 2 is included for Platinum+. No need for discussions of breakfast credit.
  • 2 vouchers for welcome drinks at 1 of 3 bars.
  • The dropoff area (entrance: Flinders Lane) is well staffed by 3-4 employees.
  • There is an exit to Collins Street tram stop at the upper ground level.
  • Luggage storage/retrieval is fast.
Cons
  • No late checkout in this room as expected. Checkout time is 11:00 AM. Didn't bother with the replacement standard room for 4:00 PM.
  • The WOW Suite was renamed Penthouse II in the NUA request page, but it is actually on the 13th floor instead of the 15th floor (not real penthouse).
  • Footsteps can be heard in the bedroom at night, presumably from the 14th floor pool or gym.
  • TV turns on at 2:00 AM each night with the loud Bonvoy advertisement.
  • Shower pressure is extremely weak. Shower area has no door (freezing).
Overall, the typical W hotel is up to expectations.

Just thought I'll share my experience staying here recently.
The bad:
  • The room looks high tech but actually not comparable to say the W Kuala Lumpur or W Brisbane. All the touch screen controls seems fancy but they are actually very basic - limited lighting options, closing and opening curtains, turning on TV etc. The TV's annoyingly turns on by itself at 2AM each night!
  • The rain shower has very weak water pressure.
  • The bed felt uncomfortably soft for me, probably the softest bed I've ever encountered in any property.
  • Denied a 4pm checkout but they did offer to move me to another room at 11am on the day of checkout. Reason is they needed time to get the suite ready for the day's check-in at 3pm.

Can't believe the issues from 2022 are identical to those of 2025. 2AM TV must be the signature for this property.
