I was thinking about this conundrum as I stayed in a W this past weekend. (For the first time, despite being a Marriott Lifetime Platinum with 650 nights in the bank.)
It's basically a brand that came up with Gen X. By the time millennials had discretionary income, the Great Recession had hammered our ability to even afford a hotel at this level. I associate the W hotel with older folks, and I'm not that young myself. To me, the brand that aimed to speak to my generation is Moxy, which I'm sure Gen Z will look upon with disgust. So the W is basically a nightclub for 45-year-olds? I don't see how this is tenable going forward. Something's gotta give. |

There are two types of W properties.
Those in the USA (Hollywood, Times Sq, Minneapolis, Austin ec.) and those outside of USA (Bali, Dubai, Brisbane, Taipei, Osaka etc.) |
