Titanium Renewal

Hi folks,
Year is ending and I do want to renew my Titanium (it is expected I do resume travelling in Q2 2021). I am currently at 69 nights, so 6 short to renew.
I do have a stay booked for 5 nights on points (check-in 28th of Dec to Jan 2nd), however I am not sure whether this stay will add up and if so it is only 5 night and check out beyond Dec 31st.

What are the options do you see for me?
a) in case the above stay will count, I can just go for 1 night somewhere.... ideal case.
b) Booking something cheap on points around me and check-in and maybe using it to work from the hotel room? -- Not sure if not revenue nights are adding up towards status
c) Booking something cheap on revenue - I will have to see if this is worth at all or not.
d) Applying for a credit card? if so, which one?

Any other tips? Which one will you go for?
Cheers

Nights occurring in 2020 will credit to 2020. If you need 6 nights to credit to 2020, those nights will need to occur in 2020. Even 12/31 will credit to 2020.

Your EQN from a credit card application may not be received by the end of 2020, so that’s a gamble.

if you are “renewing titanium“, doesn’t that mean you were titanium last year, which means your status has been extended to 2022 anyways?

good question.
I cannot see my validity date anywhere in the website or in my iphone app.
I may call tomorrow to the Bonvoy phone.

Have you picked your Elite Choice yet?

you can tell without calling. You are at 69 nights. Are you listed as titanium right now? If you are, that means your status will be extended with the rest of us.

That's a good question. If the OP has not yet picked it, that would be an easy/cheap way to pick up those 5 nights.

I chose the 5 elite night credit as my choice when I hit 50 nights this year but I can't see that it was ever credited to my yearly night total. When does that usually occur?

Thanks, I did not know the above was the actual way of accruing nights.
I actually thought it would go all to the year when you check out and pay the bill.

will the non-revenue nights count?

That was the worst choice ever. These SNA's are worth less than toilet paper. Actually in these times toilet paper is the most valuable currency so maybe a bad comparison. :D

I don’t believe this is accurate. Marriott gave all members a head start on their nights this year by providing 50% of their nights from their status earned in 2019. So if you earned Titanium status from stays in 2019, you were given an extra 38 nights that count towards your qualifying nights this year.

If one earned titanium in 2019 valid through 2021, will be extended through 2022. Has nothing to do with the 38 nights.

if the OP is already a titanium with only 69 nights, that means the OP earned titanium in 2019.

I did earn Titanium in 2019 and during 2020 I do have 31 nights stayed + 38 Bonus Promotional = Total 69 nights.

does it mean then that my status has been extended till 2022?
I thought Marriott gave these 38 in compensation for the pandemic to ease the way to renew, but not extended.

yes. your status will/has been extended. Do you know what kind of uproar will happen on FT if people in your situation didn’t get the announced extension to 2022... ? :p

There is also a massive thread on this.

OP doesn't have to do anything unless they think they're going to possibly qualify for AMB. Otherwise, elite nights for Titaniums in 2020 are largely useless.

Long Train Runnin Nov 24, 2020 9:41 am

Is that really the thought process here?

I hit Titanium last year, and this year with the bonus night bump I will still manage to requalify.

I know that they extended into next year without any effort, but I some how feel like 2021 won't just jump right back to normal.

I figured that it was worth crossing back over 75 nights in 2020 because what kind of metrics will they use in 2021 for 2022?

I don't want to find out in Q2 next year that since I only had ~70 nights credited that I only get treated as a Plat for whatever promotion/extension/etc they end up providing next year.

Am I alone in this thinking?

I figured that I would be in the best possible shape by making sure I still got to 75 this year after the boost.

houstr8male Nov 24, 2020 10:33 am

Isn’t there another elite choice offered after reaching 75 nights this year? Personally I’ve had good success using SNAs. This could be a motivator to earn 75 nights in 2020.

This is also my approach. I figure if they hand out half the number of 2020 nights next year, then hitting Titanium this year will make it easier to hit Plat next year or Titanium again. And further status extensions could well be based on 2020 status. But I was only Gold last year!

Yes, you can still choose a Choice Benefit after going over 75 nights this year.

Yeah, I figured there was no downside to going over the magic number today.

FWIW I have gotten 3 really nice suite upgrades on my last 3 stays at Marriott without SNAs at higher end properties (Le Meridian, Luxury Collection) certainly has been a nice little streak.

I have been upgraded, in the last few months, to suites at W London, Marriott Park Lane, Sheraton Grand Park Lane, Sheraton Tenerife, Ritz Carlton Abama... as a Plat. Times are good! Debating whether it’s even worth taking SNAs as a gift if the current travel trends continue.

Once you're Titanium your upgrades will be better, in the very least you're ahead of all the Platinum members who did a challenge etc. I would take the free night.

I thought the same. If Marriott decides to extend again in 2021 or credit something based on the consumed nights in 2020 then I want to be higher up in the food chain so to speak.
