New SPG Luxury card out today- Who's biting?

NEW Amex SPG Luxury Card

Much anticipated Luxury Card out today, with 100K bonus. Nothing to sneeze at but certainly would have been more impressive a few months ago.

Any takers? I'm on the fence.

I received the offer for 30,0000 extra points on my SPG personal card and I will use it until I reach the required 15K spend. 100,000 on the Luxury Card offer good until October 31st.

Already lifetime Gold and I don't think the going for platinum is worth the extra spend. I have similar or better benefits on my CSR and my AAdvantage Executive cards, but I'm somewhat of a sucker for these luxury cards.

lotrbfme Aug 23, 2018 6:44 am

Just keep in mind the trickery evil marriott is employing on this card. You might think: "oh awesome I get a free night up to 50k points. So that means I will get next year a night at that awesome ritz carlton cat 6."

WRONG. Next year they will introduce that off peak and peak pricing so most likely you are going to get a cat 5 peak hotel (same cat free night you get this year with a $95 AF marriott card)

UA-NYC Aug 23, 2018 6:45 am

Don't know what it does any better/different for us that already have that status in LT.

Now IF everyday spend was 3 points per $, that would change things...

I've received an offer, I just haven't accepted it. Could they be that devious?

And...I'm not eligible for the bonus offer based on my history with American Express. I believe my only Amex cards in the past were the SPG business which I kept open for 3 years, and the SPG personal which I did close when the annual fee came around. I currently have a Blue card.
At least it was nice of them to let me know before the credit check.

I dont understand why you wouldn't be eligible? Are current SPG personal cards not eligible?

Does anyone know if you upgrade vs apply for new gets the bonus? Thanks

Amex has a new algorithm that assesses, prior to them doing a hard pull, whether you are "eligible" (using not only the written terms of the offer, but also their undisclosed internal assessment supposedly based on your history with them-- i.e. how many cards you have, how many you have had, your spending patterns,etc.). If it determines you are not, it gives you the option to just cancel the application.

Not thrilled. I have Amex SPG personal card and am SPG Lifetime Gold (Elite) too. Don't find the need to upgrade or apply the new card for bonus. The earning power is the same as my SPG personal card. I have CSR and Citi TYP for travel and dining (worldwide) and far more. I have CSR for PP lounge access. I hardly dine or shop at hotels. I am also a sucker for metal cards, but I guess that I pass...

ahh makes sense.. do you think having just 1 SPG personal card will negate me? I just dont know if I should apply for new or upgrade. I dont think the upgrade would get the 100K bonus

I have the SPG personal amex and the newer marriott card - just applied for and got this one without any warning about no bonus.

As I am aware of the new algorithm, this card might be different, especially for current SPG card holders. The offer exclusion mostly include other issuers (Chase), instead of AMEX itself. So the system might just think the person card triggers the no offer again algorithm and deliver the ineligibility message. Just my guess though, not sure how AMEX IT works out...

What SPG number are people putting on the application? The old one? the new one? the marriott number?

I guess any new, combined account number, either Marriott or SPG would do. They are all the same.

mrstraveler Aug 23, 2018 11:19 am

I attempted to submit an application today and received the following message:

"Based on your history with Amex welcome offers, introductory APR offers or the number of cards you have opened and closed, you are not eligible to receive this welcome offer. We have not yet performed a credit check. Would you still like to proceed?"

Currently, I only have 3 Amex cards...Simply Biz, Hilton Biz and personal Plat. I also just got Chase Marriott Biz about 3 months ago  :(

I see 15K point bonus on my AmEx page for "upgrading" to the Luxury card from the current consumer SPG card. Seems weak?

Thats my understanding. I have the The Marriott RewardsŪ Premier Credit Card from Chase and applied before 8/26 and got approved with no mention of not qualifying for the offer.

Was planning to upgrade from Standard SPG Card to the Luxury version but then caught something in the Priority Pass Select terms and conditions that seems to differ slightly from the Platinum Amex.

Specifically, the Luxury card T+C's note at the end of the Priority Pass Select section: "Please note, Additional Card Members are not eligible for membership."

I don't want to get two separate cards (and pay double fees) so my wife and I can both have a Priority Pass Membership. Since we often travel separately for our respective jobs I wanted her to have her own Priority Pass membership to use. Think I'll just finally switch to a Platinum Amex where I can add up to 3x additional users for $175 and they all get Priority Pass Membership.

Kinda sad about all the changes - loved my SPG Card for so many years.

mdcubsfan Aug 23, 2018 2:00 pm

Is there much benefit to going from the new Gold to Platinum through the 75K spend? I think I can use the $300 credit pretty easy and can justify the free night covering the other $150 in fees.

I can't reach platinum through nights, but wondered if it might give me leg up in securing upgrades, etc

I'm lifetime gold so this is somewhat intriguing, but 75K in spend is just not worth the benefit from going from gold to platinum for my handful of leisure travels per year. How much do you travel?

richardt Aug 23, 2018 3:02 pm

New application or upgrade

Called to upgrade my personal spg to luxury today-sure but no bonus. Said no thanks. Applied and approved for new luxury card. No notice of not being eligible for 100k bonus.i have an old marrioott reward card -not premium . I called and was offered 30k upgrade bonus. Should I accept before 8/26 or could it compromise my 100k bonus offer on the spg luxury card?

navatwal Aug 23, 2018 3:08 pm

I apllied today and was approved, I then applied for my wife using myreferral link and she got the message below:

"based on your history with American Express welcome offers, introductory APR offers, or the number of cards you have opened and closed, you are not eligible to receive this welcome offer."

She received a bonus on Marriott Business around 3-6 months ago, I went ahead and applied, will she still receive a bonus as the terms and conditions state these new rules for preivous bonuses go into affect on August 26th.

I am very confused. I have the personal spg card that I have had for years. My only other cards are citi aa mc. I was under the impression thatn the spg card would be converted to the new card on renewal? Do I have to apply for this new card ore can I just keep my old card?

Any information or help is greatly appreciated.

Different products. Current/old SPG's AF is $95 (from $65); this product is $450. Upgrade offer is targeted, if you log on your AMEX account.

bailey911 Aug 23, 2018 3:17 pm

Well for those of us who were looking to get to Plat after losing the temp SPG Gold match to Marriott Gold benefits the spend on your existing personal SPG card this year can help. I just checked and see I have indeed hit the $75K so far this year so all I would need to do is upgrade and then I'm a Plat.

I'll do it because of of my upcoming travel certs and some points in my Marriott Account.

But when all the points are gone and the $450 renewal comes up I don't see any reason to keep any of my Chase Marriott or SPG cards.

jmj9905 Aug 23, 2018 3:28 pm

Thanks andersonCooper I did look on my amex account. They are only offering me 15,000 point bonus. It's not worth it to me. My primary goal with all my cards is to accumulate aa frequent flyer miles. I will just stick with my old spg amex and switch most of my spend to my aa citi mc.

Bud Florida Aug 23, 2018 3:37 pm

Saw this today at AMX site under AMX Offers.

Do we still get the bonus even with this language?

nfedas Aug 23, 2018 3:45 pm

My wife and I both have the SPG personal card. We mostly use mine but I got her one for the welcome bonus last Sept. Today I log in and mine has nothing for an upgrade offer while she has 100k points for upgrading and spending $5k by Oct 31. Kinda sucks because I'm SPG Plat/MAR LTP and spend over $50k on my card annually while she is a GM and we dont even use her card.

Hold on. If I upgrade I get status for points I earned already? Between the 100K bonus and the platinum status next year, I may take the plunge...

kapooncha Aug 23, 2018 5:24 pm

Hard pass on this card.

SHLTP Aug 23, 2018 5:26 pm

Just posted longer in another thread... But short data point .

Was offered 100,000 points to upgrade. Accepted. Approved right away. Not sure if because before Aug 26 or because I relatively high spender.

cfischer Aug 23, 2018 5:42 pm

They got to be joking: Earn 15,000 points after you upgrade from your current Starwood Preferred GuestŪCredit Card

jmj9905 Aug 23, 2018 5:47 pm

cfischer exactly right. I have been spending 100K for ten years and all they are offering me is 15,000 points.
Not!

tods27 Aug 23, 2018 5:49 pm

I got the 15K offer for upgrading. Pass. I did just apply and was approved for the Chase Marriott Rewards Plus card (should get the 75K bonus for that). I'll be dumping the Chase card after I get the bonus and holding onto my SPG Amex. At least this was a bit better than my Chase upgrade offer of 10K to upgrade to the Plus card.

lotrbfme Aug 23, 2018 6:03 pm

I was offered 0 wow... I wonder what is the criteria for their offers... I have marriott personal + business, spg personal + business and ritz. Maybe they dont give you a good offer when you already have the ritz or something like that?

miuk Aug 23, 2018 6:22 pm

Mine was offered 15K points.
