Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, Maui, Hawaii [Master Thread]

[Moderator note: This thread contains information regarding the Marriott and Renaissance hotels at Wailea, Maui, Hawaii. The Renaissance, however, is now closed. The Wailea Marriott is very much open and thriving.]

We'll be going in late August for a 4 night stay using our Marriott reward points. Oceanview room. I heard about construction on one side of the hotel that is quite distracting, has anyone been there lately, and what are your impressions of the best parts of the hotel to stay in? (and no, the Mokapu beach wing is not an option here!!! =))

thanks!

zeazea Jun 17, 2001 8:21 am

We just got back from a trip in May where we spent 5 nights at the Renaissance Wailea. We stayed over by the construction activity but weren't bothered by it. For one reason, we didn't spend too much time during the day in the room but when we did, the noise level wasn't that bad (it may depend, tho, on what type of construction activity is going on while you are there). We had a great view of the beach and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Have a great trip!

Here is an July 1 update. The major construction is primarily over (bulldozers, earthmovers etc), so the noise is down to hammering, sawing etc and only one unit is being constructed at the present. The dirt-n-dust is down too as you might suspect, but it can be annoying if the trades pick up big-time in the afternoon. I had no difficulties dining in the nice outdoor restaurant.

FYI fourteen "homes" are scheduled next door, "beginning at $5,750,000". I believe the lots are extra and probably are $2 mil and up. Needless to say itsa out of my immediate price range.

misterNice- thank you so much for the update!

Which side of the hotel would you request, for least disturbance? We have an "oceanview room" but I don't know where is best to be.

Karen2 Jul 3, 2001 1:03 am

Make sure you are not at the back of the hotel facing the frontage road because all the delivery trucks for all the hotels go by about 5 AM. That said, I love the grounds, unlike Kaanapali's chock a block hotels.

I like it free Jul 3, 2001 11:04 am

I am staying there in October.
How do you request an Ocean View with a reward stay.

MisterNice Jul 3, 2001 11:50 am

jetsetter777-

The lovely "homes" are being built on the north side of the hotel, so definitely request a room in the southern-most part of the hotel. Tell them you want to be nearest the nice Elua Beach side (and definitely use it exclusively as it is a world class beach, not cramped or steep as the hotel beach is, and, as all beaches in HI are, totally public and open to all). Phew!

As you probably know, they wont do actual room assignments until you arrive and check-in, so check-in as early as possible in the day even though your room will probably not be ready.

An "ocean view" should face away from the main road and should face Kaaluawe, Molakini and Lanai, ie the Pacific Ocean..

I Like it Free:

actually, my companion did the hotel arrangements so I'm not sure of the details. I think they didn't have the "standard" rooms available so they gave us an oceanview for a nominal charge ($150 or so for a 4-night stay.)

MisterNice:

I've been trying to determine how far the rooms are from the actual beach. It doesn't seem by the photographs that the hotel has its own beach - is it across the street or something? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I'm debating w/my boyfriend whether to get a room on the first floor so we can just "walk out" to the ocean or to get a room higher up for the view. Do you think it is worth requesting a first-floor room?

PS have you ever stayed in that Mokapu beach club wing??? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

MisterNice Jul 3, 2001 1:23 pm

jetsetter777-

The walk from the hotel to the hotel beach is approx 160 ft to 240 ft and itsa via concrete and asphalt walkways. The beach is due west past the pool and the nice outdoor Maui Onion restaurant etc. It is only a 2 or 3 story hotel as I remember. Itsa approx an extra 120 ft south on the beach walkway to the nice Elua Beach, just south of the rocky point jutting out. BTW this is my favorite snorkeling spot.

Upon arrival you can always go for a quick look-see and roam the hotel hallways and see for yourself to what exact view (and remember to write down nearby room numbers if you really like an area) meets your standards and later ask the DC if a vacant room is nearby.

As for me, I do not prefer first floor rooms as privacy and security are usually very foremost on my mind (at least sometimes they are).

And lastly, no.

Misternice,

FYI-although all the homes are separate and detached residences, they are being sold as "condominiums" and all the land will be held jointly by all 14 owners so happily no additional for the lot.

scteach Jul 19, 2001 9:28 pm

I just returned from the Wailea Rennaisance. All of the above information is correct, except that I believe it is about 9 stories. The reception area and lobby is on floor 4. The hotel property is beachfront and on the path that leads to all the Wailea hotels. Beaches are beautiful! A very beautiful walk along the ocean too! We stayed in Makapu wing and enjoyed it. While the hotel is set back quite a lot from the beach, the Makapu wing is right at the beach. It is a 2 story building with grassy area, lounges and a small pool just for Makapu guests. The sand is just beyond the grass. Also, a private consierge to get drinks, food, towels, whatever just for the 27 rooms in Makapu. The resort is very pretty and quite casual and friendly compared to Grand Wailea and Four Seasons. The problem with asking for a room away from the construction side is you’re even further from the beach...way back. Makapu is right next to construction and we had no problems with it at all. You’ll have a terrific time!

MisterNice Jul 22, 2001 4:38 pm

I walked over yesterday to check on my new "home" (yeah right!). Anyhow you all can check on the available site lots, building progress etc by pointing your favorite browser to www.maluhiaatwailea.com . They list a toll-free tel no for updated information. BTW the Ren Wailea hotel is immediately to the right facing inland.

Renaissance Wailea Resort - comments?

I have been trying to book an award stay at the Maui Marriott for next August, but the system indicates no availability. A few questions.

1) Does being Platinum help with award availability if you call the platinum line?

2) How is the Renaissance at Wailea as an alternative to the Marriott?

3) How does it rank against the Marriott Kauai, JW ihilani, and the Maui Marriott?

4) Is an award stay at the Ritz at Kapulua potentially worth the points?

Thanks in advance to someone who's never been to Hawaii.

Karen2 Aug 27, 2001 12:48 am

There's more to it than just the hotel. The two ends of the island are quite different and not that close together. Kapalua is close enough to Kanapali and Lahina that you could cruise on over but Wailea is the other end. A very quiet end that my family enjoys. There are a few more hotels than before but still not the hotbed of activity at night that Lahina is. The Renaissance has huge grounds and a beautiful beach but no jazzy water slides, etc. The Maui Marriott is not, in my view, one of its best properties anyway. It is OK but does not compare, for example, to the Westin or Hyatt. And it is nowhere near the size of the Marriott Kauai. There is a "however," however! Wailea is next to Kihei which is a strip of cheap hotels and condos and has some kind of "life." Doesn't do anything for me but some people like it. If you want to party, you should stay near Lahina and, I will say, Kapalua is gorgeous and very beautifully landscaped. The architecture is old Hawaii luxury. I have never stayed there but have gone there for lunch. How many more points is it anyway?

Sandra Aug 27, 2001 10:24 pm

By all means, book the Renaissaince Wailea if you can. Much nicer than the Maui Marriott. Great snorkeling adjacent to the property. Gorgeous hotels and grounds all along the beach in Wailea.
Kanapali and Lahaina are not too far; we went there twice while staying at the Renaissance for 5 days. Kihei is fun and kind of funky. Read "cheap" as in $$, not as in sleazy, on the previous post, I think the poster meant.
Staying at the Kauai Marriott for the first time in Oct. Can't wait!

Rennaisance Wailea

Has anyone stayed there recently?
Is the construction nearby completed?
Which side of the hotel is furthest from the noise?
Any help would be appreciated, I am there the second week of November.
Cheers

jetsetter777 Oct 17, 2001 3:42 pm

I asked the same question a few months back - take a gander at the archives.

I was at the Renaissance in the Makai wing over Labor day. Construction was non-existent due to the weekend and the holiday.

On the week-day nights I was there I barely knew any construction was going on - and I was facing the construction site with an ocean view.

tfjim Oct 23, 2001 1:03 pm

I was just there Sunday night (10/21), had a Priceline room, 5th floor, terrace (read trees and service area) of the Kihei wing. This is the wing on the northern (right) side of the hotel. The construction was going on on Monday next door, but the noise was not noticable. If you end up in a cheap room like me in the Kihei wing I would suggest asking for a series 68 or higher. There is an exhaust fan outside 62 that makes a bit of noise. All the floors are fine, but 5 is most convenient for the lobby as it's on the same floor. 3 on the backside and 2 on the frontside have terraces that you can walk out of instead of good-sized balconies. The higher floors, 6 and 7 get the sun earlier in the morning.

If you're on the north side of the Makai wing the construction site is directly ahead of you though you have an ocean view of sorts. Better to ask for a room that faces south to the pool, better view at sunset also.

I have stayed at the Four Seasons before, as well as spent some time at the Grand Wailea and I have to say that I find the Renaissance to be the best, by far, in terms of intimate, comfortable Hawaii resort. The size is ideal. There seems to be fewer youngin's than at the larger places (Outrigger, Grand Wailea).

The rooms are very comfortable, nice fixtures, etc, good bathrooms. The lobby area is stunning. The pool and beach are nice also. I was pleasantly surprised with my $130 Priceline room, even without the view.

Renaissance Wailea Maui

Since this property doesn't have a club lounge, I am curious if I could still get my plat amenity of a free weekday complimentary breakfast. It says not available at Resorts which this supposedly is.

has anyone hear been able to squeeze a free continental breakfast out of them?

Wailea Reniassance Hotel

I am going for a few nights in March. Could anyone recommend a really great hotel room (number or floor) or interesting things about the hotel? We have an ocean view. I have been to Maui--including Wailea. Just never had an opportunity to stay at the hotel.

Thanks.

ckinsey Jan 10, 2002 12:28 pm

We are going in May and booked Mokapu wing rooms - apparently an ocean-front separate wing 2 stories only; separate pool.

Cost was an additional $120/night over standard points. Ocena view for comparison was an additional $60.00

TrojanHorse Jan 10, 2002 1:15 pm

Lucky for you guys, unfortunate for us, it looks like we will be the guinea pigs. We are going Jan 23rd for five nights at this hotel. Will let you know upon return.

If anyone else has some hints, would be much appreciated. FWIW, I called them and they said that they give Plat upgrades.

naxos Jan 10, 2002 2:36 pm

Have not stayed there, but there is a great sushi restaurant with half priced early
time dinner prices. Very popular with locals and tourists who find out. We ate there alot during our summer trip.

trav2000 Jan 10, 2002 3:59 pm

I have stayed there 3 previous times. Will be back there again this February. Feel free to e-mail me if you have specific questions.

pitflyer Jan 10, 2002 6:40 pm

ckinsey, Did you call the hotel directly for that, or did that show online? I'm looking for a set of dates and see only two types of room Garden View and Ocean View..

ckinsey Jan 10, 2002 10:04 pm

Made the reservation then called the hotel for the upgrades. Very helpful and patient staff.

jbarm Jan 11, 2002 3:07 pm

In my mind, the only place to stay in Maui. Been there 3 times and wish I was there right now!

No water slides (thank goodness) but nice relaxed resort atmosphere with a great beach.

The Mokapu Beach Club is in front of the right wing of the hotel facing the ocean. I haven't stayed there, but it sure doesn't look like its worth the extra couple hundred a night to get a free continental breakfast. They have a separate small pool, but it is nothing special, besides, Mokapu beach at the hotel is great and is quasi-private.

I'm a Gold and they upgraded me to a nice ocean view room on the left side (facing ocean) two floors up from the lobby level which is on the third floor. Awesome view at night overlooking the pool, beach and ocean while hearing live music floating up from the lounge area.

Maui no ka oi!

ckinsey Jan 11, 2002 3:41 pm

Well, we're using points and ocean veiw was going to be an additional $60 so we went for another $60 for Makapu. Hope we don't regret it.

Besides, this is the only thing we have to pay for on the whole trip so what the hell.

scteach Jan 11, 2002 6:47 pm

Makapu Wing at the Wailea Reniassance is very nice. We’ve stayed twice before and will again this year. It’s not fancy or glitzy, but very private and comfortable. Right on beach with private lanai and continental breakfast delivered to your room each morning. Also, Makapu has its own private grassy area with lounges and a consierge just for Makapu guests. He’ll bring drinks, food, towels, etc. right to your chair and also will make reservations for dinner, etc. Small pool, but convenient for a dunk. I also agree with the Sushi/Japanese restaurant recommendation. Very good and yes, half or during early hours. We like the quiet, friendly atmosphere of Reiassance and especially Makapu. Wonderful beach too. Not busy and very pretty. You’ll love it.

TrojanHorse Jan 11, 2002 7:01 pm

Just curious, Is this Makapu Wing something that they would upgrade plats too? What might be the best possible u/g a Plat might expect at the Ren Wailea? Any hints on what to ask for?

mileshound Jan 12, 2002 7:11 am

For those of you who are paying, there was an offer in the Dec. statement for $199 a night (promo bookin code M11).

ckinsey Jan 12, 2002 12:25 pm

$199 for standard or Mokapu rooms? Thanks

pitflyer Jan 12, 2002 1:19 pm

I checked the website and found M11 offers for all the other Marriott/Renaissance in Hawaii but not for the Renaissance Wailea..

trav2000 Jan 12, 2002 2:24 pm

The M11 rate is capacity controlled. Check other dates if you have flexibility. Or, check one day at a time rather than a span of days

billhallNY Jan 12, 2002 2:47 pm

I just booked a M11 yesterday. It was $199 terrace view,$219 garden view, $249 oceanview,
$309 Mokapu. (A March date)

tfjim Jan 14, 2002 9:41 pm

I stayed in November for 1 night on a Priceline stay. Fine room in the wing past the Japanese restaurant (can't remember the name). I would say this would be the place of choice for me. Quiet atmostphere, not near as zany as the Outrigger or Grand Wailea. Good facilities/beach, fantastic lobby area.

If you're interested this place can be gotten pretty reliably on Priceline for $140 per night.

Sydneyjb Jan 14, 2002 10:15 pm

The beach club is just average. I wouldn't pay the extra, the breakfest gets a little boring after 3 days. But if you do stay in the beach club ask for the first floor. Rooms need remodleling. This place was the old Stoffers hotel, small pools old rooms, but nice staff.

TrojanHorse Jan 15, 2002 4:57 am

I just rebooked using the $199 M11 rate. This will earn pts/stay credits right?

Renaissance Wailea in Sept 02

We are going to be in Maui in Sept 02 and are considering the Renaissance Wailea. (My fiance wants to stay at Grand Wailea, but I'm hoping to talk her out of having us pay $450/night to stay there.) Right now, award rooms are available, so we may do a 4-night/95,000 point stay. The other option is to book a M11 Makapu stay for $299/night (it is also available for our dates).

I've read a lot of the old threads about this hotel pre-construction. It sounds like the construction is finished. Can anyone who has stayed at the hotel recently give a review - information about the Makapu area vs. a regular ocean-view would be appreciated. Does the Makapu area provide breakfast? Will the hotel give me any sort of upgrade or other perk for Gold status? Are the Makapu rooms larger?

Finally, how far is this hotel from other Wailea properties such as Grand Wailea?
