Does it code as anything entertaining, and can non-military make purchases?

If you have access to US military installations the AAFES has $500 VGCs and a US post office for MO's

Have you confirmed this? I work at Ramstein and have been thinking about getting into MS using exactly this method. Have you run into any issues? Any chance the BX codes as department store?
I would give it a test run with a small denomination VGC to MO first to see what they will accept at your PO. Your options would be fairly limited if they refused or shut you down. Your other problem would be depositing the MOs afterwards. Whatever on-post CU or bank would work but you would want to be care because if you burn it then your options would be limited to whatever banks you can use that take mobile deposits (USAA). |

I've done it state-side....I did a test buy of a $500 VGC at the AAFES Class Six / Gas station combo to see if it would code as a gas station (it didn't) and liquidated at the on post PO.

You don't use USAA mobile deposit for your MOs? Reading through FT threads has lead me to believe USAA is pretty chill with accepting them via mobile. I was planning on using a USAA checking account I have for my rental property. |

Thanks for the info. I will definitely test it out with like a $50-100 VGC.

I do use it some as one of my current banks/CUs (6 different currently) but it is also my primary so I use it slowly and below anyone's radar. Don't .... where you eat.
So my first attempt at buying a MO at the PO on base failed. I bought a $100 fixed amount vanilla and the POS said authorization failed. I'm not sure if this is because of the type of VGC (fixed amount vanilla VGC issued by Bancorp) I bought or some other problem. I'm going to try again with a variable amount OV VGC and see if I have any success with it. |
I've tried a fixed amount Vanilla and a variable One Vanilla, both were declined at the PO on base. I might give it a couple weeks and try again. The BX sells Western Union MOs but "due to system upgrades they only take cash until further notice."
Any other suggestions I can try? Thanks. |

Any other suggestions I can try? Thanks. The Western Union at the BX is probably your best bet once that comes up online. I know CONUS PO's have been rejecting certain VGCs (maybe Vanillas? Check the PO thread for sure) for MOs so you might be out of luck with your limited selection. Any chance you could call other BX's to see if their Western Union systems had been updated yet? Then road trip! |
